Forbes: DeSantis Says He Will Look Into Pardoning Jan. 6 Rioters If Elected President
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced that he would prioritize pardoning those he perceives as "victims" of "political targeting," including defendants involved with the January 6 attacks on the Capitol. DeSantis argued that the FBI and Department of Justice have been "weaponized" to target certain political groups. DeSantis is running for president in the Republican primary and has said he will be "aggressive about issuing pardons" to groups he believes were politically targeted, though he believes some cases may have violated the law. Donald Trump, who is also running in the primary, has also said he would pardon the January 6 rioters if elected.
Newsbusters: DeSantis Call Disproves Media Myth DeSantis Hides From Tough Questions
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced his presidential campaign during a Twitter space with Elon Musk followed by numerous media appearances. During a call with conservative media, DeSantis addressed questions about his standing in the polls, his plans for the border wall and his differences with former President Donald Trump. Conservative reporters challenged the governor on a range of issues, showing their ability to hold their own side accountable.
The Epoch Times: Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre Endorses UCP, Leader Danielle Smith for Alberta Election
Pierre Poilievre, leader of the federal Conservative Party, has endorsed United Conservative Party (UCP) leader Danielle Smith in Alberta's upcoming provincial election. Poilievre warned voters against choosing NDP's Rachel Notley and asked them to "vote for Alberta" by voting Conservative. Smith plans to pass an Alberta taxpayers’ protection act if re-elected and fight against Ottawa's carbon tax. Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Ted Morton, former Alberta finance and energy minister, have also endorsed Smith and the UCP.
The Blaze: Canadian cop punished for giving $50 to Freedom Convoy, forced to perform 80 hours of unpaid labor
Canadian police officer Michael Brisco was punished with 80 hours of unpaid labor for donating $36.66 USD to the Freedom Convoy movement, which protested the Canadian government's strict COVID restrictions and contravention of Canadian mobility rights. Brisco, who was suspended at the time for refusing to provide vaccine papers, reportedly intended to send the money to the protest organizers but it was frozen by the government. The Windsor police insisted that Brisco's actions displayed "discreditable conduct" and were a "betrayal" of the trust of his fellow officers and the community. Brisco's defense lawyer argued that the punishment was excessive for a mere donation.
Forbes: DeSantis Finally Mentions Trump After 2024 Launch: ‘I’ve Got A Good Chance To Beat Him’
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump traded jabs after DeSantis launched his 2024 presidential campaign without mentioning Trump. DeSantis suggested that Trump is attacking him because he feels threatened, while Trump criticized DeSantis’ delayed Twitter announcement as a “disaster”. DeSantis touted Florida’s shift to the right under his leadership and said he is offering a record of achievement second to none.
Newsbusters: White Kentucky Newspaper Columnist SMEARS Daniel Cameron as Betrayal to His Race
Louisville Courier-Journal columnist Joseph Gerth attacked Kentucky Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Daniel Cameron, accusing him of betraying his black skin for holding incorrect views on education, health care, policing, and welfare. Gerth characterized Cameron as “the Black man who doesn’t scare white people” and a “Black educator who rose to prominence in part because he didn't want to challenge the white establishment.” Gerth asserted that Republicans nominating Cameron did not prove their lack of racism but instead showed their willingness to nominate a black man who acted as if racism did not exist. The Epoch Times: White House: Biden Vetoed Effort to Block District of Columbia Police Reform Law
President Biden vetoed a Republican-led disapproval resolution that would have nullified crucial police reforms in the District of Columbia implemented after George Floyd's murder. The bill, which will become law, banned chokeholds, set restrictions on use of force, improved access to body-worn camera recordings, and required officer training on de-escalation. Washington is subject to congressional oversight, and while Congress has allowed the city's residents some powers of "home rule," it retains the power to overturn district government actions. The Republican-led House passed a disapproval resolution in April before the Senate approved the measure and sent it to Biden's desk.
The White House wants Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act instead of trying to repeal police reforms in the District of Columbia. The bill, passed by the Democratic-led House in 2021, aims to ban police chokeholds, end certain types of profiling, and mandate data collection of police encounters. Some critics, including some police groups, have derided the bill as a left-wing attempt to target individual police officers at the state and local level, while proponents say it would increase public trust and transparency in law enforcement.
Forbes: Here Are The Best Memes From Twitter’s Ron DeSantis Fiasco
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign launch on Twitter Spaces was a disaster, plagued by technical issues and long periods of awkward silence. The failure inspired the hashtag to trend, and a flood of memes mocking DeSantis spread across Twitter. DeSantis is widely despised by progressives due to his ongoing "war on woke" in Florida and is viewed as a walking punchline. Trump joined in the mockery, posting insults and an AI-generated meme depicting Satan and Adolf Hitler joining the Twitter Space. Even President Joe Biden got in on the fun, noting that "This link works." The official campaign ad from DeSantis' team was so poorly executed that many believed it was a satirical clip.
Newsbusters: OBSESSED: CNN and MSNBC Mention Trump by Name 399 Times in 10 Hours
CNN and MSNBC mentioned former President Donald Trump's name a total of 399 times in just 10 hours between 6 am and 4 pm ET on Thursday. Despite Trump's absence from politics, he remains a hot topic of discussion in every new Republican candidate's announcement. On MSNBC, Morning Joe mentioned Trump's name the most while CNN's Inside Politics averaged more than one Trump per minute. Both networks regard the former President as a ratings gold mine.
The Epoch Times: House GOP Questions IRS on Study of Program That Would Make Agency Tax Preparer, Auditor
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has come under criticism for its decision to award a $15m contract to left-leaning think tank New America to conduct an independent review of a new government software programme, the IRS Direct File program, which would see tax preparers empowered to prepare Americans’ tax returns. Both the Biden Administration and a Democratic Congress have invested heavily in the IRS, allocating $80bn to fund the addition of 87,000 new agents to its payroll, many of whom could conceivably work as tax preparers if the Direct File programme were to become fully operational. The IRS is piloting the Direct File programme independently of congressional approval, a point which has raised questions over the legality of the IRS’ actions.
The fact that New America has expressed support for IRS expansionism in the past has also led to accusations of political bias and a lack of due diligence in the selection process. This, coupled with the IRS’ long history of backlog and management issues, means that the proposal to make the IRS into America’s tax preparer, filer, and auditor can be seen as particularly problematic. Simplification of the tax code, along with safeguarding taxpayer personal financial information from the risk of private data breaches, remain two of the key issues that proponents of Direct File will have to overcome if they are to achieve their goals.
Red State: Poll: In a Head-to-Head Matchup for Senate, Republican Eric Early Comes out on Top, Increases Dems' Urgency to Replace Feinstein
Republican candidate Eric Early is polling ahead of Democratic candidates in the race for California Senator Dianne Feinstein’s seat, according to a Berkeley IGS poll. The poll also found that two-thirds of registered voters believe Feinstein’s recent illness has rendered her unfit for office, while nearly a third of voters are still undecided about what should happen to her. The poll indicates a divided field for next year’s primary election, with Early leading at 18% and Democratic contenders split between Congresswoman Katie Porter at 17%, Congressman Adam Schiff at 14%, and Congresswoman Barbara Lee at 9%.

The Epoch Times: A Spate of Killings Highlights Resentment, Unrest in China's Rural Villages
A series of violent killings against village officials by Chinese peasants has generated widespread attention and sympathetic reactions on social media. The cases, which took place over 11 days, involved attacks on officials who were often seen as corrupt and abusive towards the local population. Many of the killers were pushed to violence after being bullied or seeking justice through legal channels. The Chinese Communist Party is paying attention to the situation, but efforts to tighten control over villages and set up rural law enforcement forces have generated criticism and increased tensions.

The Epoch Times: China to Undermine US-Marshall Islands Alliance if US Fumbles Military Deal Renewal: Indo-Pacific Expert
China is striving to undermine the bilateral relationship between the Marshall Islands and the United States, as the Marshall Islands has not renewed its military contract with the U.S. In exchange for exclusive access to lands and waterways for national security purposes, the U.S. spends about $70 million annually on the Marshall Islands, but this has been deemed insufficient. Experts in the field of radiation have noted that at least 67 nuclear tests carried out by the U.S. on the Marshall Islands between 1946 and 1958 have caused widespread environmental damage and devastating health effects. The failure to secure a deal with the Marshall Islands could block the free movement of the United States in the region and also impact trade routes.
Reportedly, China’s communist regime is using malign influence to buy over Pacific nations’ members of Parliament in its goal to destroy democracy in the region. China has allegedly used money to buy off 39 out of the 50 members of Parliament in the Solomon Islands, which was enough to change the constitution to delay elections. In her opinion, the ultimate goal of China’s communist regime is to create vassal states, undermining functioning democracies. Analysts warn that the situation in the Solomon Islands could be replicated elsewhere in the Pacific region, and it could have a significant impact on trade routes and the United States’ freedom of movement across the region if China secures control.

The Epoch Times: Orange County Proposes $9.3 Billion Budget

The budget will not include state and federal funding related to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the county will continue its focus on reducing homelessness and public health programs.

Finland experienced negative electricity prices due to the launch of a new nuclear power plant, which has resulted in excess energy production. The Epoch Times: House Freedom Caucus Presses McCarthy to Add Conditions to Debt Ceiling Deal
Conservative House Republicans have urged House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to add demands to President Joe Biden instead of making concessions to increase the nation's debt ceiling. Negotiators from both sides are working on a compromise that will prevent a first-ever default on the country's financial obligations, and could reach an agreement as early as May 26. The House Freedom Caucus has asked McCarthy to double down on the provisions of the Limit, Save, Grow Act and add two more demands, which are that the president accept the recently passed Secure the Border Act, and that he scrap funding for a new FBI headquarters.
The Epoch Times: Democrat Pressure Mounts on Biden as He Negotiates 'In Good Faith' With McCarthy
House Democrats are dissatisfied with the progress of debt-ceiling negotiations with House Speaker McCarthy and may vote against a deal that compromises too much. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has warned that a compromise that violates the party’s core principles will not automatically be accepted by members of his caucus. During a press conference, Jeffries criticized Republicans for their “unacceptable” demands and expressed confidence that President Biden will maintain his position. Some Democrats, including Rep. Jamaal Bowman, have labeled House Republicans as “economic terrorists” and asked Biden to halt the debt limit talks. Meanwhile, some House progressives have sent a letter to Biden asking him to invoke the 14th Amendment to ensure that the country does not default.

The New American: Military Needs to Prepare for Neurocognitive Warfare - The New American
Retired national security specialist and former Army special operations officer, Robert McCreight, has warned that the U.S. military must prepare for non-kinetic forms of warfare. These "clandestine non-kinetic weapons" pose a significant threat as they are silent and largely undetectable, capable of inflicting damaging physical and neural effects on their targets. McCreight outlined three key areas of attack: a lightning decapitation strike against leadership, a covert surprise attack to disable leadership and ongoing attacks to degrade leadership analysis and defensive systems. He suggested that future soldiers could be vulnerable to "NeuroStrike" weapons that would degrade cognitive functions, perception, reasoning, judgment and decision-making.

The Imaginative Conservative: A Little Flower in the Gutter
Good men should read "The Woman Who was Poor" by Léon Bloy, which illustrates the ugliness of sin and its consequences. Bloy was a central figure in the French Catholic Literary Revival, and this novel is a masterpiece of the genre, with graphic depictions of sin in a wicked world. Clotilde, the eponymous heroine, models chastity and innocence in the midst of affliction. The darker the backdrop of evil, the brighter shine forth the light of sanctity.
The Epoch Times: Florida Book Store Fights Jacksonville Law Forcing Use of Customers' Preferred Pronouns
A Catholic bookstore owner in Florida is suing the city of Jacksonville in federal court, arguing that its human rights ordinance requiring the use of “preferred pronouns” is a violation of her constitutional rights. Christie DeTrude, who owns Queen of Angels Catholic Store, believes that being required to use a customer or employee’s chosen pronouns would go against her religious beliefs, which include the Catholic teaching that sex and gender are inseparable. Violating the ordinance that requires a “welcoming” environment could result in a fine of up to $500 per occurrence. The city’s Office of the General Counsel is asking for the case to be thrown out, since the store has not faced any enforcement threats. The lawsuit is being fought with the assistance of the Alliance Defending Freedom.

The Epoch Times: Are We Headed Toward a Genderless, Sexually Dysfunctional World?
A therapy conference included a class on sexual dysfunction for women that focused on erasing binary language and promoting gender fluidity. The instructor suggested there are as many genders as there are stars in the constellations and redefining the word "woman." The author felt uneasy and feared that this message is creating a totalitarian society. Despite disagreeing with the gender-fluid message, the instructor was kind and provided useful clinical ideas. The author worries that normalizing kink, multiple partner scenarios, and other types of sex could lead to a sexually dysfunctional and unstable society.
Daily Wire: Neural Implants Help Paralyzed Man Walk Again
After 12 years of paralysis caused by a motorcycle accident, Gert-Jan Oskam has regained the ability to walk with crutches and even stand, through a combination of physical therapy and neurological implants. The “digital bridge,” a combination of brain and spinal implants, used machine learning to translate electrical signals from Oskam's brain to his legs. However, the control of walking was not completely natural and the treatment requires invasive surgery and extensive physical therapy.
The Blaze: Texas Children’s Hospital announces ‘heart-wrenching,’ ‘painful’ plan to end sex-change program for minors — CEO vows to refer patients out of state
Texas Children's Hospital will discontinue its child sex-change program to comply with Senate Bill 14, legislation that prohibits gender transitioning and gender reassignment treatments for minors. The hospital's CEO acknowledged the changes as "heart-wrenching" in a leaked email and will refer affected patients out of state after the law goes into effect on September 1. One of the authors of the bill, Republican Senator Donna Campbell, called it necessary protection for children "from social experimentation and exploitation" and stated that "gender dysphoria is a soft description for mental delusion." Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into the hospital for breaking state law by performing gender-transitioning surgeries on minors.

The Imaginative Conservative: Bram Stoker’s "Dracula": Faith Triumphant
Dracula by Bram Stoker is a collision of epochs where modernity crashes into the supernatural. The story of the embattled faithful fighting against Dracula captures the martial attitude of the traditional knights of the Cross, offering an unexpectedly rich analogy of the spiritual struggle told through a unique epistolary narrative.
