Ron DeSantis: 'I'm Getting All the Meat off the Bone'
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced his 2024 presidential campaign on Twitter, promising hard-nosed management. His campaign will center around issues such as education reform, blocking racial discrimination, curbing illegal migration, and implementing fast-track construction projects. DeSantis also cited his battle with Disney as an example of how he can overcome opposition.

U.S. Spent $13 Billion Sponsoring Unaccompanied Minors Since 2012
The US spent $13 billion sponsoring unaccompanied minors at the border since 2012, with 150,000 encounters in 2022 alone, but as many as 85,000 are missing and unaccounted for. Despite being vulnerable to human trafficking and abuse, reports have emerged of some being forced to work dangerous jobs in violation of child labor laws. The ORR is responsible for their placement and welfare, coordinating with funded care providers, but has been accused of facilitating the sale and abuse of foreign children and not conducting proper background checks.

'On day one we'll be spitting nails': DeSantis rages against deep state and pledges to dismantle it in Glenn Beck interview
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis faced tech issues during his presidential announcement, prompting criticism from the left and his Republican opponents. Undeterred, DeSantis spoke to Glenn Beck about his vision for America as president, including reclaiming power from unelected bureaucrats in Washington and ensuring the right personnel are in place. He plans to use Article 2 authority to deconstruct the administrative state and empower the people. DeSantis also wants to focus on stable money and push back against woke businesses, potentially by using outlets like Twitter to bypass legacy media. He is currently the second place Republican primary contender behind Donald Trump in polls.

Wisconsin election fraud trial set to begin just 2 months before start of 2024 presidential election
A jury trial is set to begin in a lawsuit seeking $2.4 million in damages from Republicans who attempted to cast Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes for Donald Trump in 2020, just two months before the 2024 presidential election. Democrats filed the suit against the fake electors and two attorneys for Trump for violating laws in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential race.

National Review: DeSantis Opens 2024 Bid with Series of Veiled Shots at Trump: ‘Governing Is Not Entertainment’
DeSantis Opens 2024 Bid with Series of Veiled Shots at Trump: ‘Governing Is Not Entertainment’
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is launching his campaign for president, painting a portrait of former President Donald Trump as undisciplined, easily distracted, obsessional, and toxic with independents. DeSantis is taking a veiled approach in his criticisms, not naming Trump explicitly, but attacking his spending habits and obsession with an entertainment brand. While Trump still has a hold on the Republican Party and holds a national lead in polls, DeSantis believes that Republican voters want an end to the chaos at the southern border and that he can win independents, unlike Trump. He does not see Trump as a winning option for the 2024 presidency, based on data from swing states that do not favor Trump.

Dem Rep. Frost: Voters Will Reject DeSantis' 'Far-Right Fascism'
Representative Frost accuses Gov. DeSantis of "far-right fascism" and trying to eliminate black history and excellence from schools. Frost argues that Republican policies often aim to create wedge issues for elections and that the book banning is complete hypocrisy. He predicts that voters will reject this far-right fascism, which he defines as criminalizing immigrants and doing everything to set up a presidential run.

The Epoch Times: Energy Department Officials Refuse to Testify at House Hearing on Biden's Gas Stove Rules
Energy Department Officials Refuse to Testify at House Hearing on Biden's Gas Stove Rules
Two senior Department of Energy officials refused to testify before the House Oversight Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Energy Policy, and Regulatory Affairs regarding the Biden administration’s proposed rule on gas stoves. They cited the ongoing rule-making process surrounding their new appliance efficiency standards as the reason for the failure to attend. Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Pat Fallon criticized the department’s no-show during the hearing, saying they “ought to be here at this hearing to answer questions about rule-making on gas stoves.”

In an updated analysis, the DOE said that nearly half of gas stove models currently being sold on the market wouldn’t be in compliance with the new efficiency standards. The DOE is seeking to set new energy-efficiency standards for refrigerators and washing machines as well as other household appliances. The move has sparked widespread concern among industry experts and Republican lawmakers who fear the new standards will increase costs for manufacturers and consumers at a time when energy prices have skyrocketed.

Minnesota County Had No Right to Confiscate Elderly Woman’s Home Equity, Supreme Court Rules
Tyler v. Hennepin County: Supreme Court rules Hennepin County violated the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment when officials seized an elderly homeowner's $40k condo to pay $15k in back taxes and kept $25k in equity for themselves. Legal scholars argue county's argument gives states too much power. Tyler received bipartisan support from progressive and conservative groups, the ACLU, AARP, Chamber of Commerce, and disability advocates. Justices did not decide on the case's potential impact on the "Excessive Fines Clause" of the Eighth Amendment.

LGBT groups, progressives frustrated with Target over moving Pride merchandise: 'Beyond disappointing'
Target has faced criticism from LGBT groups and progressives after southern locations moved Pride apparel from displays. According to an insider, the company relocated and reduced Pride sections in stores largely in rural areas of the south to avoid backlash after issues Bud Light faced in recent weeks. While conservatives who were opposed to the sections were briefly satisfied, Dr David J Johns of the National Black Justice Coalition and other groups have criticised Target for caving to what they describe as extremist political forces and for betraying the LGBT+ community. The groups argued that hiding Pride apparel is tantamount to insisting people go back into the closet and urged firms like Target to be better allies.

The Epoch Times: A Defining Time for Monarchies
A Defining Time for Monarchies
King Charles III's coronation presented an opportunity to reposition the concept of monarchy in today's global society. The competition between competing social systems is between systems that tend to be either long-term and ethically based, or materialistic and transactional. The future of constitutional monarchies as temporal republics move to define the concept of democracy in their own images is uncertain, as the symbolic example of tradition in the coronation ceremony may not have been enough to bring about a worldwide debate. The fundamental of the debate is that no two republics are alike, any more than any two monarchies are alike, but all societies need more than material satisfaction to make them whole. Although delivered only through an abstract dialectics, it is about what makes people long-term satisfied.

An associate professor at Rutgers University, Brittney Cooper, delivered a racist rant against white people and called for their liquidation. However, all peoples, regardless of race, have warred on the "other" and went on the offensive for conquest and plunder depending on their capabilities, resulting in tribal or international hegemony. Is the Biden Administration Going Soft on China?
The bipartisan consensus on countering China is ending, with Democrats skeptical of the need to confront rising powers and prioritize economic relationships with China. The Biden administration is looking to "de-risk" U.S. supply chains and distance itself from the Trump-era term "decoupling." However, China appears to be less eager for a reset and is ready to exploit divisions in Washington and between Europe and the U.S.

Economic Headwinds Weigh on Bank Results as More Money Set Aside for Bad Loans
Four out of five of Canada's big banks have missed earnings expectations as they struggle to contain costs and set aside larger amounts of money to cover bad loans. TD Bank group has had a particularly tough quarter, warning of "tougher days ahead" as it admitted it no longer expects to meet its medium-term earnings growth target. Though CIBC was the only bank to exceed expectations, senior banking executives cited a more challenging environment for their poor results, as well as the collapse of TD's $13.4bn takeover of First Horizon Bank. The banks' US operations are also said to be struggling.

The Epoch Times: US Economic Growth for Last Quarter Is Revised Up to a Still-Tepid 1.3 Percent Annual Rate
US Economic Growth for Last Quarter Is Revised Up to a Still-Tepid 1.3 Percent Annual Rate
The US economy grew at a slow rate of 1.3 percent from January to March, as businesses reduced inventories in anticipation of an economic slowdown. This is a deceleration from the previous quarters, but consumer spending rose and retail sales, manufactured goods, and the job market remained solid. Meanwhile, Germany's economy shrank in the first quarter, marking a second quarter of contraction. Despite the US economy's resilience, there are obstacles such as higher borrowing rates and the risk of a debt default, which would cause downgrades and trigger a recession deeper than expected.

The Epoch Times: Should I Buy a Cottage With Friends or Family?
Should I Buy a Cottage With Friends or Family?
Experts warn that before Canadians consider buying a cottage property with friends or family they need to discuss finances, long-term life goals, and the purpose of the cabin, as well as ownership schemes and credit scores. Credit scores are vital as each owner is fully obliged for the mortgage and if one of the buyers has a lower rating, lenders average out the scores resulting in a higher mortgage rate, affecting everyone’s credit scores. There are two main property ownership schemes. In a joint tenancy arrangement, if one owner dies, their share transfers to the other, as in a spousal situation, whereas, in a tenants-in-common agreement, different sizes of stakes are allowed in the property and should one of the owners die, their share becomes part of their estate.

If the heirs decide to opt-out of the investment in a tenants-in-common situation, the remaining owner would owe them a severe amount of money. Capital gains taxes are a looming issue for those buying a recreational property with others; capital gains are taxed at 25 per cent in Ontario, meaning that half of the tax ($125,000) would have to be paid by each owner if the cabin's value doubled from $500,000 to $1.5 million.

COVID response still causing chaos at Arlington Cemetery
Robert "Jazz" Jasinski, a Marine veteran, had to wait 16 months for his ashes to be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, which some attribute to the backlog caused by COVID-19. Jasinski would have been bothered by the delay, but he would not have approved of jumping the line. Memorial Day is coming up, and Arlington's year-long waiting list for interments is a national disgrace. The cemetery needs to find solutions to this problem and prioritize laid-to-rest veterans.

The Corner: The Strange Fans Who Want to Veto Taylor Swift’s New Boyfriend
Taylor Swift's new boyfriend has a controversial past, which has angered some of her fans who are calling for her to end the relationship. Swift seems unbothered by his past behavior, causing a rift between her and some of her fans. The fanbase's obsession with Swift's relationships reflects society's obsession with celebrities and the desire to believe in something or someone.

Being a celebrity means being built up and torn down repeatedly by society. The modern woke movement has no established path to repentance or forgiveness, making it difficult for celebrities to make comebacks after being exposed as "sinners." The outrage over Swift's boyfriend's past behaviors can be seen as a warning shot from the Left, with some calling for her to be cancelled for not adhering to their standards.

Fox News: Paralyzed man regains this 'simple pleasure' thanks to AI 'digital bridge'
Paralyzed man regains this 'simple pleasure' thanks to AI 'digital bridge'
A paralyzed man has regained the ability to walk after two invasive surgeries and six months of intensive training thanks to AI-powered implants that re-established communication between the brain and spinal cord. The device can stimulate the lower spine and allow someone with a spinal cord injury to walk again. The breakthrough was the result of a decade of research built on the work of French neuroscientist Grégoire Courtine.

The AI-powered implants work by decoding brain recordings in real-time, which allows the computer to determine how the patient wants to move their legs. After six months of training, the patient was even able to regain some sensory perception and motor skills he had lost, even being able to walk with crutches when the tech was turned off. Although the development is significant, more research will be needed to understand the full extent of the technology's impact.

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks returns to the mound after recovering from a capsular tear in his shoulder, reminding fans why long-term contracts with pitchers are risky. Hendricks, who signed a four-year, $55.5 million contract with the Cubs in 2019, missed his first starts last season due to the injury, costing the Cubs about $12 million while he underwent rehabilitation. Despite this, Hendricks has a record of reliability in his eight seasons with the Cubs, with only one previous trip to the Injured List in 2017 for an inflamed tendon. The Cubs have gone 128-94 in Hendricks’ starts, including his winning Game 6 in 2016 that helped send the team to a World Series victory.

Supreme Court Rules Against EPA in Major Wetlands Case
The Supreme Court has upheld an Idaho couple’s rights to build on their property without EPA permission in a ruling that curbs federal regulatory authority over wetlands. The couple had been threatened with daily fines of over $30,000 because of the EPA’s designation of their patch of land as containing wetlands, which the Sacketts disputed. The court found that the Clean Water Act extended only to “wetlands with a continuous surface connection to bodies that are ‘waters of the United States’”. The Biden administration had argued for the “significant nexus” standard, which would include wetlands that linked to other waters.

The recently passed Secure Act 2.0 allows matching contributions directed towards the Roth 401(k), eliminating required minimum distributions for holders of Roth 401(k)s in retirement starting in 2024. Saving 10-15% of income for retirement is commonly recommended, but it doesn't have to be all in a 401(k), with other options being a Roth IRA, taxable brokerage account or IRA.

The Federalist Papers: Parents File Lawsuit Over School Board Forcing Students To Attend Pride Storybook Time
Parents File Lawsuit Over School Board Forcing Students To Attend Pride Storybook Time
The Montgomery County Board of Education in Maryland is facing a lawsuit from Christian and Muslim parents who claim that the board’s policy, which removed their right to opt their young children out of gender identity lessons, violates their faiths and infringes upon their constitutional rights. Parents were sent an email on March 23 informing them that they would not be notified about gender identity lessons occurring at the district’s schools. The email also removed the option for parents to opt-out. Despite more than 70 parents protesting the decision, their concerns were dismissed, prompting the legal challenge.

One of the books at the heart of the controversy, “Pride Puppy," is intended for children aged 3 and 4 and tasks them with searching for terms such as “intersex flag,” “drag queen,” and “underwear” in a word list. Another book, “Born Ready,” intended for fifth-graders, promotes gender transitioning and encourages teachers to affirm a child’s chosen identity. Prior to the board’s email on March 23, the policy committed to accommodating religious beliefs and practices, but parents who expressed objections to the material and sought alternative assignments were met with resistance from school administrators. Montgomery County Public Schools refused to support parents opting out of the gender identity curriculum.
