Gabby Petito case: Brian Laundrie's mother promised son shovel, garbage bag, jailhouse cake in love letter
Roberta Laundrie vowed to bring a shovel and garbage bags to dispose of a body in a "burn after reading" letter to her son Brian before he left on a cross-country road trip with his former fiancée Gabby Petito, who would be later found dead in Wyoming. The letter was made public in a civil lawsuit brought by Petito's parents against the Laundries and their attorney Steve Bertolino, who argued it was written before their son left. Petito's parents' lawyer Pat Reilly, however, argued that it was proof that the Laundries knew about the murder. After months of disputes, a hearing was scheduled to decide its admissibility.

Through an attorney, Roberta Laundrie said she wrote the letter inspired by a writing exercise book called "Burn After Writing" that her son and Gabby often joked about. Embarrassing ideas could be burned away, she argued. The letter was written to convey to her son how much he meant to her and that nothing could ever divide them, and also included an extended bible verse from Romans. In a separate affidavit filed in March, Roberta Laundrie said that while she used words in the letter that seemed to have a connection with Brian's action and his taking of Gabby's life, she "never would have fathomed the events that unfolded." She asked people to read the entire letter before believing the hype put out by Pat Reilly.
