The FWS has not answered questions about whether the agency calculated the cost of employees’ salaries for the time wasted on the sessions, nor who chose to hire the consultants. The lawmakers’ investigation was prompted by allegations of impropriety at the Drug Enforcement Administration over spending on outside consultants.
Fox News: South Carolina passes 'heartbeat' abortion bill that limits access to 6 weeks
South Carolina has passed a six-week "heartbeat" abortion restriction that allows abortion up until a fetal heartbeat is detectable, with exceptions for the life of the mother and fetal anomalies. Gov. Henry McMaster has vowed to sign the bill and physicians who violate it could face jail time and revocation of their medical license. The bill also requires biological fathers to pay child support at the conception of their child. Democrats previously protested the bill with a 12-hour delay to proceedings.

Rep. August Pfluger grilled FBI official Jill Murphy on her lack of action regarding the Durham report, which found the agency's investigation of the Trump campaign was based on "raw, unanalyzed, and uncorroborated intelligence." Murphy admitted she had not read the report, which left Pfluger "speechless." The hearing also addressed a letter sent by Pfluger and House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green, which requested information on the Chinese regime's clandestine "police stations" in the US, with no response from the FBI. Murphy stated that the FBI is "working actively to identify and investigate" threats from China.
Forbes: Texas, New York Take Divergent Paths On Natural Gas Generation

In contrast, New York is enacting laws to force the closure of its gas plants and 37 plants have plans to retire over the next few years, raising concerns about grid reliability amidst delays in renewable generation capacity projects. A recent report has revealed that New York has shed 500,000 residents whilst Texas has seen a population increase of over 1.3 million, perhaps indicating a correlation between the states' divergent energy policies and their resulting outcomes.

Sen. Tim Scott, the lone Black Republican in the Senate, has launched his 2024 presidential campaign. Black Kansas lawmakers, one Democrat and one Republican, are criticizing the state's Democratic governor after she vetoed a project for the development and restoration of a significant portion of the Underground Railroad. Gov. Laura Kelly used her veto to nix the project from the state budget after state Rep. Marvin Robinson, the champion of the project, sided against her on key votes involving abortion and transgender athletes. The project would have received $250,000 in the next state budget for drafting a state plan to develop and restore the Quindaro Ruins in Kansas City, Kansas, which Robinson represents.
Kansas Republican Rep. Patrick Penn, who is Black and helped secure the funding for the Underground Railroad project, accused Kelly and other Democrats in the state of having "bigoted expectations" that Black voters line up and vote for Democrats. Robinson, who also criticized Kelly's veto, had been referred to as a "house Negro" by a fellow Democrat for siding with the Republicans on key issues. Kelly did not comment on the personal accusations, but stated in her veto message that advocates should work through proper channels to seek funding for the Underground Railroad project.

Fox News: Texas winery operator sentenced to 7 years in prison for role in Jan. 6
Christopher Ray Grider, a Texas winery operator, has been sentenced to nearly seven years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for his involvement in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol's House chamber, during which police fatally shot another rioter. Grider also tried to cut power to the Capitol building during the riots, which prosecutors called "a terrifying act of political and institutional sabotage." Grider joined the mob's assault on the House chamber and helped another rioter break the Speaker’s Lobby’s glass doors, "setting in motion the chain of events" that led to an officer fatally shooting fellow rioter Ashli Babbitt, prosecutors wrote in a court filing.
