Fox News: Vanity Fair gets backlash after smearing Elon Musk with David Duke comparison: 'The media has lost its mind'
Vanity Fair gets backlash after smearing Elon Musk with David Duke comparison: 'The media has lost its mind'
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to announce his 2024 presidential campaign during an event with Elon Musk on Twitter. Vanity Fair correspondent Bess Levin compared Musk to former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, claiming that Musk has made racist and extremist comments on Twitter. Trump campaign and political commentators criticized the comparison, and DeSantis joins a crowded Republican field for the 2024 election.

Fox News: GOP asks FBI to investigate senior Pentagon official they say leaked classified information
GOP asks FBI to investigate senior Pentagon official they say leaked classified information
Republican senators are requesting that the FBI investigate Undersecretary Colin Kahl for allegedly leaking classified information to the media, specifically regarding Chinese spy balloons. The senators claim Kahl has a history of such leaks and are calling for an update to their demand for an investigation made in April 2021. Kahl worked in the Obama administration as the national security adviser to Vice President Biden and is currently serving in the Biden administration.

The senators also allege that Kahl shared classified information in a 2017 tweet about a National Security Council deputies meeting on counterterrorism in Yemen. Kahl denies the claim, stating that the information he shared was widely known. The FBI did not respond to a request for comment.

Vanity Fair Compares Elon Musk To David Duke In Low-Blow Attack On DeSantis
Vanity Fair has compared Elon Musk to former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke in an attempt to undermine Republican Governor Ron DeSantis ahead of his 2024 presidential bid. The inflammatory headline reads: "Report: Ron DeSantis Will Formally Announce His 2024 Bid With Elon Musk, Because Apparently David Duke Wasn't Available." The article portrays Musk as supportive of white supremacy. Implying a far-right alignment between Musk and DeSantis, the article concludes: “Anyway, just as a reminder, a DeSantis presidency is as terrible a prospect as a Trump one.” Many on social media criticized the media for dishonestly attacking DeSantis, with some suggesting that the more unhinged the left-leaning media became, the more average Americans would gravitate toward messages that reflected sanity.

Fox News: Oregon Republican senators vow to continue boycot until last day of session
Oregon Republican senators vow to continue boycot until last day of session
Republican senators in Oregon have led a walkout, preventing legislative progress on hundreds of bills, including on abortion and sex reassignment care. After almost three weeks, 10 senators have been disqualified from reelection due to their unexcused absences. The senators plan to continue the boycott until the final day of the legislative session next month, disqualifying themselves from serving as lawmakers in the next term. The Republicans and an independent senator will return on June 25 to pass “bipartisan” bills. The crisis highlights the deeply partisan politics playing out nationwide.

The boycott led by Oregon’s Republican senators has prevented a quorum for almost three weeks, moving the state’s senators one step closer to a constitutional showdown. Republicans have boycotted legislature in 2019, 2020, and 2021. This year’s boycott has disqualified nine Republican senators and one Independent from serving in the next term. As it stands, hundreds of bills await action in the Senate, including sweeping measures on sex reassignment care and abortion that conservatives object to. The situation may challenge the constitutional amendment in court.

Those earning less than $50,000 annually would see the largest raises. The Joint Finance Committee further recommended implementing a $15 minimum wage for full-time state employees and allocating $2.2m of funding to implement its marijuana control act, passed after the governor allowed bills legalizing recreational cannabis and authorizing the establishment of a regulated industry to become law without his signature.

Foreign Policy: Decoupling Is Already Happening—Under the Sea
Decoupling Is Already Happening—Under the Sea
Subsea cables connect the world, but geopolitical risks have made it risky to build new ones. The number of ships for repairing cables is limited, and delays can lead to financial losses. China and the US have been involved in a cable confrontation, with both sides delaying approvals for new subsea cables. This may lead to rerouting of new cables through friendly waters, creating a new "subsea Iron Curtain". Countries that could be left out of new pipelines may be offered inclusion in a Western public-private cable alliance.

Russia Bans U.S. Officials, Opens Criminal Cases Against ICC Officials - The New American
Russia banned 500 high-ranking US officials, including former President Barack Obama, in retaliation to the Biden administration's anti-Russian sanctions. This came after the United States and its Western allies imposed anti-Russian sanctions during the G7 summit in Japan. Russia has also opened a criminal case against International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan and judges Tomoko Akane, Rosario Salvatore Aitala, and Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godinez, who in March had declared an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Three scientists working at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Siberian Branch were charged on suspicion of high treason for reportedly divulging state secrets on missile technology. RAS colleagues of the three scientists penned an open letter, stating that the arrests affected research and risked impeding Russia's progress in hypersonic technology. Meanwhile, in Germany, police are looking into the suspected poisoning of an exiled US-based Russian activist and a journalist who attended a gathering of Russian dissidents in Berlin organized by Moscow oligarch-turned-Kremlin-critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky. The activist suggested that the Kremlin was responsible for her suspected poisoning.

The Department of Finance identified non-profits as at risk of terrorist financing abuse. However, the report also noted that non-profits were not the main risk, with illicit drug trafficking, fraud, and third-party money laundering identified as the largest money laundering risks in Canada. The finance department said only a small subset of businesses were complicit in illicit activities such as money laundering.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s Zaslav Floats Streaming ‘Super Bundle’: Can It Happen?
Streaming companies may need to package and market their streaming services in newly-configured bundles with their competitors. Consumers are frustrated with having to subscribe to multiple services, rising prices, ads, and unclear charges. While bundling already exists in the form of Disney Bundle, the myriad of options is overwhelming. The history of the cable business, where flexibility and multiple price points were lacking, should be a warning. A re-bundling approach requires a sustainable business model, multiple revenue streams, tiering flexibility, and cross-company genre options.

Nearly 2,000 Illinois children have been abused by Catholic clergy since 1950, according to AG's investigation
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul released a report on May 22, 2023, revealing that over 450 Catholic clergy had abused 1,997 children in Illinois since 1950. The report accuses the church of failing to warn others about possible abusers, dragging its feet to confront accused clergy, and being woefully slow to acknowledge the extent of the problem. The report also includes individual accounts of sexual abuse and names of accused clergy and religious brothers in each diocese. The review began in 2018 under Raoul's predecessor, Lisa Madigan, who released a blistering report as she prepared to leave office.

National Review: Keep Artificial Intelligence out of Government Surveillance
Keep Artificial Intelligence out of Government Surveillance
The government's ability to monitor its citizens is now a "real-life concern," with artificial intelligence making it easier to do so undetected. The government has been caught leveraging emerging technologies, such as using the NSA to surveil video game users or the Department of Homeland Security using live location tracking to keep tabs on participants in the Black Lives Matter movement. More recently, the Biden administration has been deploying AI to monitor social media activity, and federal agencies have awarded contracts for technologies designed to suppress "disinformation," but which actually suppresses free speech. The federal government is using taxpayer dollars to surveil and censor its own citizens, a terrifying realization that should worry everyone.
