Front Page Magazine: A Professor Remembers
m years of experience, explaining an A grade to a student, required a degree of self-awareness and of honesty that were not part of their upbringing; they’d never had a chance to practice those skills. Valentina, though, was used to explaining things, both to her parents and to her older brother. Valentina explained that the three figures bound to the posts were Jesus and the two thieves who were executed alongside him. “They were crucified,” she explained. Other students nodded; they’d heard this story at church or on TV or in rap music. Prof. K. paused; the students’ level of knowledge, even of the Bible, exhausted her. Would they understand that Auden’s description of a crucifixion was not crude revisionism, or sophomoric blasphemy, or radical undermining of Christianity, but a respectful homage to the ultimate human sacrifice? It was anyone’s guess. Thank God the final exam format was multiple choice; the students’ chances of picking the right answer depended in large part on luck. Except Ivy League students without actual cognitive skills, these kids’ on-the-fly guessing was their best college predictor. After class, the only student who hung back to speak to Prof. K. was Valentina. “I always get my assignment at church about this poem,” Valentina says. “Yours was the first class that explained it to us. I thank you, Professor.” Plumage of tears bobbed in Valentina’s eyes. Prof. K. smiled. Prof. K. remembered teaching, remembered the glow of mind on mind that teaching could kindle, remembered the incredible miracle of human beings relating to each other, each person a different universe. Valentina radiated deep gratitude; despite the earthquakes rattling the world, there was still room for teaching, for gratitude, for uplift. Both of them stepped out of the timelessness of the classroom into the rush hour of the crowded rotunda. It was so cataclysmically quiet; they hugged, perhaps too long, in the midst of a crush, an expansive intimacy in a place stiff with statute and appointment. Valentina left, crying. Prof. K. lost in thought, crossed the quad, when the college president appeared, bareheaded beneath the cloudless sky. “Professor K.!” he shouted. His smile was a replica of a reptile’s. “I have good news!” Prof. K. looked at him as if he were talking ancient Sumerian. The end was near.
