National Review: The Corner: Illegal Immigration Is Not a Fact of Nature
The Corner: Illegal Immigration Is Not a Fact of Nature
The Biden administration has chosen to allow millions of migrants to enter the U.S. without visas, causing a massive influx at the southern border. The Trump administration had halted these flows by requiring asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while their cases were adjudicated. President Biden moved to abandon this policy, sparking new migrant waves and releasing them into the U.S. on “parole.” The political and cultural ramifications of uncontrolled immigration are significant, with Republicans feeling betrayed by open defiance of immigration controls.

Sanctuary City Bummed Now That It Has To Do The Actual 'Sanctuary' Part
NYC is struggling to cope with the influx of illegal immigrants despite being labeled a "sanctuary city." Officials admit that the label was just a signal of virtue and not a plan to provide shelter. Citizens of liberal-run cities are trying to avoid sheltering migrants themselves despite railing against Southern red states and demanding they show compassion.

Daily Wire: Democrat Lawmaker Predicts Backlash ‘In The Streets’ If White House Agrees To Spending Cut
Democrat Lawmaker Predicts Backlash ‘In The Streets’ If White House Agrees To Spending Cut
Democratic Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have rejected President Biden compromising with Republicans on spending caps and a debt ceiling increase, warning of backlash from lawmakers and the general public. The Republicans want to link an increase in the debt ceiling with spending caps, while Democrats want to separate the two processes. The government’s national debt limit of $31.4tn has already been exceeded this year. There are concerns about the government reaching default in as little as two weeks. No spending reforms or increased work requirements for federal welfare will be accepted.

There is a risk of a financial crisis due to neglecting to increase the debt ceiling, and the national debt, now over $31.7tn, is holding back economic growth. Interest rates are also weighing on the budget, forcing lawmakers to use more revenue on servicing debts than funding programs. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned that the government could run out of funds in June, while a report from the Congressional Budget Office shows there is uncertainty regarding funds for the rest of May. Republican House Minority Leader McCarthy is struggling to find a compromise with the Democrats before the deadline. The House Freedom Caucus is also refusing to pass legislation without support from the Republicans.

Biden negotiated spending cuts with House Republicans during talks to raise the debt ceiling, angering the far-left. Reps. Pramila Jayapal and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez warned of a backlash in the streets, while the GOP demanded transparency on the true default deadline.

Rep. Gaetz Shoots Down Talk of Removing Speaker McCarthy Over Debt Negotiations
Representative Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) denies any intent to unseat current House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) amid rumors of a rift among House Republicans over McCarthy's debt ceiling negotiations with President Biden. Gaetz initially opposed McCarthy's bid for speakership, but has acknowledged that he has "no reason" to remove him unless there is a "dramatic, unexpected turn" in negotiations. McCarthy has passed the Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023, which would increase the US debt limit by up to $1.5tn through March 31, 2024, impose spending reforms, and predicate discretionary spending on Fiscal Year 2022 levels. Gaetz did not object to the Republican proposal on the grounds of wanting a "clean" debt limit increase but due to his consistent anti-debt ceiling voting record.

GOP Panel Threatens to Subpoena Teacher's Union Leader Randi Weingarten in COVID Policy Probe
Republicans are threatening to subpoena American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten as part of an investigation into remote learning policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The investigation is focused on whether Weingarten colluded with President Joe Biden’s administration to keep schools closed and teachers working remotely. Republicans maintain that the AFT has frustrated their investigation, and are seeking documents and data related to the AFT’s communication with the CDC.

AP Says Fetterman Flouting Senate Dress Code Shows ‘Robust Recovery’ From Depression
Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has been seen wearing hoodies and shorts on the Senate floor, which goes against the dress code. However, the Associated Press reports that Fetterman has been wearing relaxed clothing as part of his recovery from inpatient treatment for clinical depression and hearing loss. While some Democrats see this as a positive sign, some conservatives argue that Fetterman is flouting the rules and lacks respect for American institutions. Meanwhile, Fox News Digital found that Fetterman’s staff have edited his quotes from the Senate floor to make him sound less incoherent.

Forbes: Marjorie Taylor Greene Buys Kevin McCarthy’s Used Chapstick For $100,000
Marjorie Taylor Greene Buys Kevin McCarthy’s Used Chapstick For $100,000
Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) won a GOP fundraising auction by placing a bid of $100,000 for a lip balm used by US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R). The move has been criticised by Democrats amidst the two parties' battles over the debt ceiling. Other Republican Representatives including Florida Rep. Aaron Bean (R) placed bids for the auctioned lip balm, with the winning bidder winning a dinner with McCarthy.

Greene and McCarthy have since become close allies after initially having a contentious relationship during her bid for the US House in 2020. McCarthy and President Biden are currently in tense negotiations over raising the nation's debt ceiling. The average amount raised by House Republicans as of April was $686,075, compared to $404,687 for Democrats.

The Epoch Times: ANALYSIS: Behind the Debt Ceiling Negotiations—Who Has the Upper Hand?
ANALYSIS: Behind the Debt Ceiling Negotiations—Who Has the Upper Hand?
The national debt in the US has been a contentious issue since Alexander Hamilton proposed that the federal government should assume the wartime debts of the 13 states in 1790. Currently at over $31 trillion, Republicans and Democrats are at odds over how to address the issue. Republicans want to keep taxes low and cut federal spending, while Democrats want to increase taxation on wealthy households and corporations while using targeted government spending to stimulate the economy. Recently, after months of negotiations, a deal may have been reached after President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met one-on-one and staked out their non-negotiables.

How Major US Stock Indexes Fared Tuesday
US debt crisis fears weigh on Wall Street, with the S&P 500 down 1.1% due to Democrats and Republicans being unable to come to an agreement on a deal to prevent the American government from running out of cash. There is a growing concern among investors that Washington will only feel the urgency to act if the markets begin to shake enough to show the stakes.

The Epoch Times: Stock Market Today: Wall Street Slides as Debt Worries Worsen
Stock Market Today: Wall Street Slides as Debt Worries Worsen
Stocks dropped as the U.S. government crept closer to a potentially disastrous default on its debt. The S&P 500 fell 1.1 percent after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said, “We’re not there yet” on a deal to prevent the U.S. government from running out of cash. Prices for Treasury bills have fallen, in part because of the debt-ceiling worries, which in turn has pushed up their yields. On Wall Street, AutoZone dropped 6 percent after reporting weaker growth in revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected. PacWest Bancorp rallied for a second day after announcing the sale of a $2.6 billion portfolio of real-estate construction loans. Other banks also strengthened, including a 4.6 percent jump for Zions Bancorp.

The Epoch Times: Africa’s Forceful First CBDC Push a Resounding Failure
Africa’s Forceful First CBDC Push a Resounding Failure
The Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) efforts to promote the use of eNaira, the country's first-ever central bank digital currency (CBDC), have failed to gain traction, with only 1.5% of the digital wallets in use since its launch in October 2021, according to an International Monetary Fund report. Despite a redesign of the currency, cash withdrawals were restricted, leading to a cash shortage that upset Nigerian citizens and prompted protests. The eNaira's usage has been lacklustre and led to fears among investigative journalists and the IMF alike of a centralised financial lockdown that could restrict transactions in certain spaces and places.

The IMF also warned of potential financial risks from banks suffering lower profitability with the validity of CBDCs, while the anonymity and digital form of the eNaira pose untested forms of risks, as have cryptocurrencies in the past. The US Federal Reserve also published a white paper last year on the effects of a CBDC on the country, opening it up for testing among citizens. However, the idea received a backlash, with many Americans citing concerns over privacy breaches, government overreach and hacking. A student from Texas suggested that the government was unfit to secure such an asset. A CBDC should have "no place" in the American economy, the respected Cato Institute stated in its warning that such currencies pose a critical threat to the country's economic systems.

They are also allowed to use social media to promote the message that family rejection could lead to suicide. Forbes: NIL Exacerbates Inequities For Women Athletes Even As It Provides Opportunities
NIL Exacerbates Inequities For Women Athletes Even As It Provides Opportunities
Despite the hype surrounding Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals for NCAA athletes, the reality is that only a small percentage of student-athletes benefit from them. At Oregon State University, fewer than a third of student-athletes have NIL deals, with most generating only a few thousand dollars, while football players at top programs generate the most money. Women student-athletes are particularly disadvantaged, with gendered and international student-athlete inequities creating new divides on campus. Nevertheless, some student-athletes see NIL as a good thing as it creates opportunities for those who want to take advantage.

Some high-profile student-athletes with agents get the best NIL deals, but most student-athletes can participate in NIL and make a little extra money. The differences in NIL income aren’t a problem for some teams like Oregon State’s women's basketball team with the right culture and locker room environment, according to some players. Despite the inequities, some student-athletes recognize that the recognition and money generated by those with significant NIL deals are good for the school and their sport, even if they aren't the ones benefiting financially.
