But treasurers claim these organisations are weaponising retirement funds to the detriment of those investing in them. They cite the fact that approximately 80% of shares in corporations in the S&P 500 index are held through institutional asset managers, thereby giving a small number of organisations outsized power to control corporate boards, management, and policies.
The letter sent to proxy managers and asset managers demands that they explain what their process is for deciding how investors’ shares are voted, what global clubs they have joined and commitments they have made to them, whether they earn fee income from ESG consulting services, if they have voted in favour of ESG initiatives, and if so, what evidence they have that such initiatives benefit shareholders and pensioners. The letter also asks whether asset managers have voted to force companies to undergo racial or environmental audits. Financial officers from 18 US states have signed the letter to asset and proxy managers BlackRock, Vanguard, Fidelity, UBS, State Street, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, Credit Agricole, Allianz, Capital Group, Goldman Sachs, Bank of New York, Amundi, PIMCO, Legal & General, Edward Jones, Prudential, Deutsche Bank, Bank of America, and Invesco.

The Epoch Times: Trump Appears Virtually for Hearing in Manhattan Criminal Case, Judge Sets Trial Date
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has brought criminal charges against former US President Donald Trump, accusing him of falsifying business records relating to hush money payments to adult entertainment actress Stormy Daniels. Trump appeared remotely at the Manhattan Criminal Court on May 25, his first appearance since pleading not guilty in April. The charges relate to alleged payments made during Trump's presidency to keep Daniels silent about an alleged affair with the former president that took place in 2006. Judge Juan Merchan told Trump he had signed a protective order governing discovery evidence relating to the case. The order limits what materials Trump can view and bars him or his team from leaking them to the press or public. Violating the protective order could result in fines or imprisonment. Trump's lawyers have until August 29 to file pre-trial motions, with the plaintiff granted until October 10 to respond. Trump faces trial beginning on March 25, 2024.
