More than a third of Americans reported declining financial well-being last year, despite record low unemployment rates. The Federal Reserve’s annual survey found that 35% of adults said they were worse off in 2022 than they were in 2021, the highest level since the annual survey began in 2014. The least-educated, black and Hispanic Americans were the hardest hit. The share of adults saying they were doing okay financially fell from 78% in 2021 to 73% in 2022, the lowest since 2016. Sixty-four percent of people stopped using or switched to cheaper products due to inflation while 51% of adults reduced savings to cope.
Americans’ economic dourness has led to widespread disapproval of President Biden’s economic policies. The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that just 33% of Americans approved of Biden’s economy, and even among Democrats, only 61% expressed support for Biden’s economic policies. In a separate poll, Gallup reported that 60% of Americans believe their federal taxes were too high. People’s perception of their own financial well-being has also made them negative about the national economy. A gap of 55 percentage points between their perception of the national economy and their finances has opened up.

An IRS whistleblower and his team were removed from the Hunter Biden probe by the Justice Department, raising allegations of political retaliation against whistleblowers. The whistleblower’s attorney and Empower Oversight have sent a letter to the IRS Commissioner providing evidence of intimidation. The Inspector-General has since investigated the Justice Department, finding that they did not improperly interfere with Hunter Biden.

The letter from Empower Oversight notes that agencies should not require whistleblowers to seek approval before speaking out and that they must take steps to prevent retaliation against whistleblowers. The response from the whistleblower’s supervisor warning agents to obey the “chain of command” appears to be an attempt to intimidate employees from speaking out.

The Imaginative Conservative: Is American Theater Really Dead?

Popular entertainment is where a polity goes to do its philosophizing, and theater has lost its sense of power. Movies and television are dominant, but nothing compares to the kinetic energy of live actors. We must not let the traditional theater go to seed and promote works that inspire healthier self-reflection. Those concerned with the political good should encourage and promote theater that provokes contemplation.

Fox News: Runaway steer 'Lester' wrangled on Michigan highway
A runaway steer named Lester was captured on Interstate 75 in Holly, Michigan, after being on the lam for several weeks. Four people, including a rider on horseback, chased down and cornered the steer in the fields and woods along the freeway. Lester was eventually lassoed before attempting to jump a guardrail and cross into the southbound lane. The bovine is now safe back in the pasture with a story to tell all the other livestock.
