The Epoch Times: ANALYSIS: TikTok Faces Escalated Ban Worldwide, Poisoning the Minds of Teens a Main Concern
ANALYSIS: TikTok Faces Escalated Ban Worldwide, Poisoning the Minds of Teens a Main Concern
TikTok, the Chinese-owned video-sharing platform, is not just scrutinized for security concerns, but also for promoting harmful content involving self-harm, eating disorders, and suicide in children’s feeds. A study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate established accounts posing as 13-year-old teenagers in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Videos with potentially dangerous content about disorderly eating, self-harm, or mental issues were shown to these dummy accounts and harmful content was delivered consistently to usernames containing the characters “loseweight.” Lawmakers in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada have passed legislation banning access to TikTok on government-issued devices, schools, or even in an entire U.S. state ( ).

According to the study, TikTok is promoting attitudes that are poisoning children’s minds by promoting self-harm, disordered, and deadly attitudes to food. During the pandemic, adolescents spent a lot of time at home using electronic devices, leading to surges of tic-like disorders in teens. TikTok is also pushing videos about borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, and multiple-personality disorder towards teens, promoting disorders and making children upset. Teens with heavy social media use are twice as likely to be depressed as light users. A study by London-based mental health charity stem4 found that social media is driving children and young adults to have a low sense of self-worth and be dissatisfied with their appearances ( ).

Biden says China’s ‘silly balloon’ derailed open communications with Beijing
President Biden says a spy craft incident earlier this year derailed talks with China about maintaining an open line of communication. Biden hopes to reopen talks in the near future despite the incident. Tensions between the US and China have escalated throughout Biden's presidency, with China ramping up its aggression toward Taiwan after a visit from the now-former House Speaker and a visit from the Taiwanese President. Biden frames the conflict with China as a competition to be outpaced rather than an adversary to be defeated.
