Red State: Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates Reveals the Biggest Threat to the USA, and It's Not China
Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates Reveals the Biggest Threat to the USA, and It's Not China
Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates expressed concern on "Face the Nation" about the polarization of American politics, stating that the phenomenon is more pervasive and characterized by meanness and lack of civility. He thinks the ongoing debt negotiations between President Joe Biden and House Republicans will hurt America's status on the world stage. Gates believes that leaders should aim to treat each other with more civility and focus on what is best for America, rather than attacking political enemies. The former secretary of defense thinks that it is hard to find common ground when one party undermines the legitimacy of the Supreme Court and promotes a two-tiered justice system.

Lawyer For NYC Woman Accused Of Racism Over Bike Dispute Asks Public For Help Tracking ‘Defamatory’ Statements
An attorney for Sarah Comrie, a white pregnant woman accused on social media of being racist over a bicycle rental dispute with a black man, has created a Twitter account to track defamatory remarks about his client. Attorney Justin Marino has produced receipts which he says prove Comrie paid for the bike, which contradicts the widely circulated claim that she “stole” it from the man. Marino has joined Twitter to help build defamation cases against those who smeared his client. Many on social media and some media outlets quickly ran with the framing that Comrie had tried to steal the bike from the black man, despite the limited context shown in the video.

National Review: The Corner: Jeremy Clarke, R.I.P.
The Corner: Jeremy Clarke, R.I.P.
The Spectator columnist, Jeremy Clarke, has died at his home in Provence, leaving behind a legacy of empathetic and humorous writing. His column, "Low Life," which chronicled the lives of those whose paths did not follow an untroubled route, was funny and touching in equal measure. Clarke's writing was natural and heartfelt, belied by the effort he put into his work both in terms of time and emotion. He was one of the greatest writers ever to appear in the pages of The Spectator.

Clarke's writing was not restricted to his column but extended to his memoirs, two novels, and other non-fiction writing. He wrote about his experiences growing up in an ordinary family, his battle with terminal illness, and his love of animals. He had a gift for making mundane experiences seem interesting and hilarious. Clarke is remembered for his contribution to humorous and empathetic writing and will be greatly missed.

Design Recipes: Less Is More
Minimalism is a popular design trend for homeowners and apartment dwellers, creating a functional and calm space. Soft colors, natural woods, and crisp lines characterize this style. To achieve the minimalist look, start with a neutral palette, select only what is necessary, mix hard and soft materials, and look for innovative design. When purchasing items, begin with larger pieces and don't omit area rugs, which can add warmth and prevent the space from appearing barren.

National Review: The Corner: Freedom Struggles
The Corner: Freedom Struggles
Sir Tom Stoppard writes in the Telegraph that Britain needs to keep fighting for the release of Putin's political prisoners, particularly Vladimir Kara-Murza. Hungary continues to prevent the EU from taking action against Russia and has prevented actions proposed against Kara-Murza. Putin has added several Americans to their list of sanctioned individuals in retaliation for the US' recent curbs, and it is interesting how Putin appears to be adopting former President Donald J. Trump's enemies. Ukrainians are fighting for the people in their territories and not just the physical land. In southeastern Michigan, a woman blamed Ukrainians for swastika graffiti around the area. The Metropolitan Opera in New York flies Ukrainian colors in solidarity with the country.
