The Epoch Times: Indiana Adds ID Requirements to Mail-In Voting to Make Process 'As Secure As' Voting in Person
Indiana Adds ID Requirements to Mail-In Voting to Make Process 'As Secure As' Voting in Person
Indiana's new law, House Bill 1334, will require voters who submit an absentee ballot application to include a form of ID, in addition to the already required signature verification. The ID can be the last four digits of their Social Security number, or a driver's license number, state ID number, or voter registration number. Voters can also submit a photocopy of their driver's license or Indiana ID card. The law aims to protect Indiana's voting integrity, but Democrats say it will make it more difficult for the elderly, those voting by travel board, and military members to vote.

The law also prohibits local governments and political parties from widely mailing out or distributing unsolicited absentee ballot applications to Hoosiers, although voters can still request one. The eligibility requirements remain the same, and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Indiana Election Division, the secretary of state, and county election offices will share data to ensure that only legitimate voters are requesting mail-in ballots online. In the 2022 general election, about 36% of voters did so by absentee. The law aims to maintain voter confidence in Indiana's election process.
