The American Spectator: Continued Decline in Religion Spells Trouble for the Culture War
Recent studies show a decline in religious belief and church attendance in the US. This decline began decades ago and affects various aspects of society, including politics. The General Social Survey conducted from 1972 to 2022 showed that weekly church attendance has decreased by 19 points to 22% today, and those who never attend religious services are at 33%. The loss of faith affects the political future of the religious right, whose moral imagination and orientation in the culture war have been shaped by traditional religion.
The decline of religious affiliation is prominent in middle America, where religion is fading in size and importance. Burge predicts that religious affiliation declines in these areas would make them more politically progressive, while states with religious Hispanic immigrants, such as Texas and Florida, provide an opportunity for GOP to hold off Democratic advances. However, the political future of the religious right is less certain than it has been, as conservatism today centers more around anti-woke principles rather than being specifically Christian. The culture war is now a battle to restore religion in America, as it provides conservatives with a moral imagination that orients the culture war.
