The Epoch Times: NTD News Today (May 19): Pentagon Makes $3 Billion Ukraine Accounting Error; Lawmakers React to Immigrants Housed in NYC School Gyms
The Pentagon overvalued military aid to Ukraine by $3 billion, leaving over $5 billion in funding still available. Lawmakers criticize New York City for housing illegal immigrants in public schools and historic hotels.
Fox News: Border Patrol agents come under fire while rescuing abandoned, injured 4-year-old boy
Border Patrol agents in San Diego were fired upon twice in one week as they assisted an injured four-year-old boy who had been tossed over the border wall by an illegal immigrant. A chopper from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) responded to provide assistance and support. The incidents underline not only the threats that agents face but also the ongoing presence of criminals and smugglers vying to enter the U.S.
A report by Fox News this week revealed that Border Patrol agents encountered 16 people who are on the FBI’s terror watch list attempting to enter the US illegally at the southern border between ports of entry in April. CBP stats show that from the start of this fiscal year so far, 98 encounters have occurred at the southern and northern borders between ports of entry. This is the same as all FY22 statistics, more than all four fiscal years 17–20 combined, meaning the problem is growing significantly with no signs of slowing.

Washington Free Beacon: Tim Scott Officially Enters 2024 Presidential Race
Republican Senator Tim Scott enters the 2024 presidential race with a long-shot bid for the nomination as only 2% of Republicans plan to vote for him in the primary, according to polls. Scott tries to portray himself as unusually compassionate despite a solidly conservative voting record, and he has significant donor support and strong name recognition in his home state of South Carolina. His optimistic campaign contrasts sharply with that of former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who portray the US as a nation in decline.
Newsbusters: Hayes: Not Giving 'Gender-Affirming Care' To Minors Is 'Authoritarian'
Chris Hayes accuses Florida Governor Ron DeSantis of authoritarianism, claiming that his policies on education, abortion, Disney, and drag shows are hallmarks of an authoritarian regime. He also criticizes DeSantis's new law that bans gender-affirming care for minors, which he claims is an authoritarian move that tells parents how they can or cannot raise their children. Hayes laments that people tend to associate authoritarianism with historical figures like Stalin or Mussolini and not with politicians like DeSantis.
Red State: Republican Lawmakers Threaten Anheuser-Busch: Sever Ties with Dylan Mulvaney or Face Investigation
Conservative senators Ted Cruz and Marsha Blackburn are investigating Anheuser-Busch’s partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, alleging the alcohol brand is violating policies to market to minors. Mulvaney campaign features advertisements for Bud Light which ended up causing Bud Light to lose conservative customers. This is an attempt to use the government to punish a corporation for making a decision to embrace the “woke” left, and despite its attempts to get back into the good graces of its most loyal customer base, Bud Light is still suffering at the hands of the free market.
National Review: The Corner: Life Tenure for Judges Is Not Like Life Tenure for Academics
Tom Nichols in the Atlantic missed the point when he criticized conservatives for defending life tenure in Supreme Court justices while criticizing academic tenure. Life tenure for judges is in the Constitution to ensure their independence and fidelity to the rulebook, as explained by Alexander Hamilton. Like judges, teachers and professors on public payroll should also follow a specified curriculum or be kept on a short leash to ensure they are faithful to the expressed wishes of democratic lawmakers. Conservatives aren’t being hypocritical in wanting the same thing from both judges and academics: fidelity to democratic lawmakers. In fact, Nichols’ claim that Thomas’s ethical issues are far worse than those of Abe Fortas in 1969 is ahistorical nonsense. None of the currently serving justices have been accused of anything remotely comparable to Fortas’ corruption and cronyism.
The Blaze: Fetterman's handlers and allies in the liberal media caught deceptively doctoring quotes to make him sound coherent
Pennsylvania senator John Fetterman's tendency to speak incomprehensibly since his stroke has been discovered during a recent Senate hearing. A misquoted excerpt from Fetterman's question that was distributed by his political staff and allies resulted in attention that exposed their efforts to downplay Fetterman's debilities. While having bipartisan endorsement for his recovery, there is apprehension that Fetterman is not up to the demands of his job due to his ongoing incapacity.
The Federalist Papers: Kari Lake Attorney: Maricopa County's Own Data Shows Massive Issue with Review of 334K Ballots
Attorney Kurt Olsen, representing Arizona Republican Kari Lake, has challenged Democrat Katie Hobbs’ victory in the governor’s race, citing data from Maricopa County showing that 334,000 mail-in ballots were not verified. The official tally shows that Hobbs won by 17,000 votes, or 0.7 percent of over 2.5 million votes cast statewide, but Lake questions the legitimacy of tens of thousands of ballots. Olsen said that Maricopa’s own log data shows that over 274,000 ballots were approved at less than three seconds each and that Level 2 reviewers were so overwhelmed that they simply did not look at the signatures.
Lake’s legal team has released video footage showing differences in how reviewers appeared to verify signatures on mail-in ballots, and she claims that the signature verification process in Maricopa County is a complete sham. She asserts that hundreds of thousands of bad ballots were injected into the system due to the lax verification process. A whistleblower who testified in court on Wednesday claimed that there was not the same sense of urgency regarding voter verification during the general election in 2022 as during the primary, and that the county turned down reviewers’ offers to cure mismatched signatures.
Red State: Biden Confused in Japan, Led by Jill, Almost Falls Down the Stairs
Joe Biden attends G7 meeting while also engaged in debt negotiations with Republicans. He has been criticized for his embarrassing behavior during the summit, being led by the hand by his handler and almost falling down the stairs. Biden requires directions to locate other world leaders and has to read script notes during his speeches. His mental and physical health, age, and leadership methods are being increasingly questioned.
Fox News: Mayorkas impeachment gains steam among Republicans in purple districts as border chaos continues
House GOP lawmakers in purple districts are backing an impeachment effort against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over the exacerbated border crisis at the southern border. California Republican Rep. Mike Garcia and Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina are among those who have thrown their support behind the impeachment, with other swing district representatives considering it. The growing crisis at the border has been brewing a maelstrom for Mayorkas, especially after the end of Title 42. The statute allowed the U.S. to expel migrants at the southern border due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Breitbart: MSNBC's Hayes to DeSantis: Sex Change Treatment for Minors Is None of Your 'Goddamn Business'
MSNBC's Chris Hayes criticized Gov. Ron DeSantis for signing a Florida law banning sex change therapy for minors, calling his actions authoritarian and an infringement on parental rights. The law prohibits all gender-affirming care for minors, and allows state courts to change custody agreements if a child is receiving or is at risk of receiving such care. Hayes argues that the law is ideologically and punitively driven, and that the government should not tell parents how they can or cannot raise their children .
Fox News: San Francisco's proposed reparations plan could cost city $100 billion: Report
San Francisco's proposed reparations for eligible Black residents could cost the city over $100 billion, but Mayor London Breed has not committed to cash reparations. San Francisco's African American Reparations Advisory Committee argued that the city owed millions of dollars in compensation to Black residents for decades of discrimination, but the high cost is viewed as "unrealistic" for a city already struggling with its budget and a lack of agreement over the issue.
Breitbart: State Department Promotes Transgenderism over Gay Rights
The State Department's declaration of an "International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia" has been criticized by social conservatives and gay activists. Many feel that the department's advocacy for transgenderism is detracting from other diplomatic crises and scaring away potential allies in socially conservative countries. Additionally, the tweet was criticized for placing transgender rights above those of the gay rights movement, despite evidence that some teenagers are being pushed into transgenderism against their will.

Fox News: Biden admin reveals plan to train Ukraine pilots on F-16s, 'will decide' when, who will provide jets
The US will train Ukrainian pilots on fourth-generation fighter planes, and support international efforts to procure warplanes for Ukraine. The training, including on F-16s, will take place over the coming months in Europe, reflecting the US's commitment to Ukraine's self-defense. This move comes as Russia's Air Force aims to change the course of the war, and Ukrainian pilots have pleaded for advanced warplanes to counter Russian attacks.

Euromaidan Press: Russo-Ukrainian War. Day 450: Russia in retreat near Bakhmut
Russia continues to launch missile strikes on Ukraine, with the situation in Bakhmut and Maryinka remaining particularly intense. Ukrainian forces have made advances but face challenges due to Russian artillery and mortar numbers. The British Defence Minister has confirmed that Storm Shadow missiles have been used in Ukraine, while the Belarusian military has reportedly erected anti-tank fortifications on its border with Ukraine. The latest estimates suggest that since the beginning of the conflict, Russia has lost personnel, tanks, armoured combat vehicles, artillery systems, multiple rocket launchers, air defence means, UAVs, and more.

The Ceausescus trust Godeanu, but most of his colleagues resent his influence. Foreign Policy: The Paradox of Hiroshima
The G-7 summit is being held in Hiroshima, highlighting the city's status as the first victim of a nuclear weapon and a global symbol for peace, even as Japan's security architecture relies on the U.S. nuclear umbrella and Japan is expanding its military capabilities. There are tensions between Hiroshima's message of nuclear disarmament and the world's current trajectory, especially with China on track to expand its nuclear arsenal and a renewed reliance on these weapons. Nonetheless, the city's history presents a grim reminder of what nuclear use means, but honoring its memory entails a ceaseless effort to balance competing priorities and to find a path to leading from the harsh reality to the ideal.

The Epoch Times: Delta CEO Warns More Government Regulations Could Raise Ticket Prices
Delta CEO Ed Bastian has warned that higher ticket prices could be brought in by new regulations put in place by the Biden administration. The Department of Transportation has unveiled plans for rules requiring airlines to cover additional expenses for passengers when the carrier is at fault. This could include covering meals and hotel rooms if flights are cancelled or delayed, but not all US airlines offer cash compensation, instead using travel vouchers or frequent flyer miles. Delta, which already compensates passengers in event of a disruption, has said it would be “premature” to say if it will be lobbying against the proposals as the rules have not yet been finalised.
The Epoch Times: UK Unveils £1 Billion Semiconductor Strategy
The UK government has unveiled a long-term semiconductor strategy that includes a pledge of up to £1 billion in funding over the next decade, attracting and nurturing talent, and strengthening relationships with leading chip-manufacturing countries. Most of the funding will go towards research and innovation, with smaller sums devoted to supporting curricula and international collaboration efforts. Some companies criticised the policy paper for being “flaccid” due to the relatively small amount of funding, which they say fails to address the challenges facing UK chipmakers. The UK’s investment compares unfavourably to the US’s $52 billion and the European Union’s €43 billion packages to encourage domestic manufacturing.
Semiconductors are crucial to modern technology, with complex manufacturing processes that are scattered across the world. Most advanced semiconductors are manufactured in Asia, with South Korea’s Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) leading the way. Geopolitical concerns and pandemic-related disruptions have raised anxieties about supply chain and national security risks, and the UK government has responded by pledging to mitigate risks and improve access to infrastructure. However, some industry figures have criticised the strategy for not doing enough to tackle the challenges faced by UK chip manufacturers.
Forbes: Three Reasons Why Proposed DCR Guidelines Are Difficult For Renewable Developers
US renewables development pipeline reaches 438 GW, with 3 GW of new solar projects contracted in Q1 2023, despite IRS guidance making it difficult for developers to qualify for the domestic content adder. To meet the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR), a solar project's equipment must be classified as either a construction good, with 100% US-sourced iron and steel, or a manufactured product, with 40% domestic total cost rising to 55% by 2024. However, a preliminary analysis shows imported modules will remain the most economical option through 2025 due to US-made modules' higher cost, the ramp-up time for US cell manufacturing, and the implementation challenges of the guidance.
Fox News: Debt ceiling talks between White House, Republicans stall as default looms
Debt ceiling talks between Republicans and White House have hit a snag due to a lack of agreement on what Republicans want to cut on the "discretionary" side of the ledger, while Democrats are hesitant to cut some of those programs. Republicans are sticking to their position of wanting to increase defense spending, which is the largest part of overall discretionary spending, while Democrats maintain that a responsible, bipartisan budget agreement remains possible if both sides negotiate in good faith. The US faces a deadline of around June 1 to reach a debt ceiling deal.

Breitbart: CA Officials To Pay Churches $1.4 Million for Abortion Coverage Mandate
California will pay $1.4m to four churches that challenged the state's mandate for health insurance plans to cover abortions. The state agreed to pay $500,000 to Foothill Church in Glendora, Calvary Chapel of Chino Hills in Chino and Shepherd of the Hills Church in Porter Ranch, which sued the DMHC in 2015, and $900,000 to Skyline Wesleyan Church near San Diego, which launched a second lawsuit backed by the Alliance Defending Freedom in 2016. Two federal courts in California ruled that the First Amendment protects the churches’ right to decline abortion coverage in their health insurance plans. The ADF discovered emails suggesting the mandate followed calls by Planned Parenthood to force religious organisation to include abortion coverage.

The New American: Blackwashing in Film is Insulting to Both Blacks and Whites
Leftist filmmakers are perpetuating the trend of blackwashing, portraying historical and fictional white characters as black. This trend denies European-descent whites their heritage while minimizing black culture and normalizing the malleability of history. Blackwashing is insulting and damaging to both communities and harmful to society at large.

The Epoch Times: U.S. Supreme Court Rules Against Amgen in Patent War
Amgen loses patent battle against Sanofi over cholesterol-lowering drug. In 2014, Amgen sued Sanofi and Regeneron for patent infringement over their monoclonal antibody drug, Praluent, which helps lower "bad" LDL cholesterol by blocking a protein called PCSK9. Amgen won the initial trial in 2016, but a Delaware judge later invalidated Amgen's patent claims. On Thursday, the US Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favour of Sanofi, affirming the judge's decision. Amgen remains the better seller of the two drugs, but Sanofi praised the ruling for defending the industry against overreaching patent claims.

Washington D.C. police officer, Lieutenant Shane Lamond, has been charged with obstruction of justice and making false statements, after he allegedly leaked confidential information about former Proud Boys chairman Enrique Tarrio to other members of the far-right group. Lamond told Tarrio about an arrest warrant issued against him, after Tarrio burned a Black Lives Matter flag during a protest in December 2020, and lied about his relationship with Tarrio during an interview with federal investigators in June 2021. Lamond was also found to have communicated with Tarrio about the FBI and U.S. Secret Service in relation to the January 6 riot.

Fox News: Sam Brinton's latest arrest involves alleged theft of Tanzanian fashion designer's clothes, lawyer says
Sam Brinton, a former senior DOE official, was arrested on Wednesday evening and charged with grand larceny after allegedly stealing the luggage of Tanzanian fashion designer Asya Khamsin in 2018. Khamsin had reported her luggage missing shortly after arriving at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. The search warrant was executed using information provided by Khamsin and her attorney, Peter Hansen. She has accused Brinton of wearing bespoke clothing that was packed inside her luggage, which she believes had been stolen.
Brinton, who made headlines when appointed as a non-binary gender-fluid person to oversee nuclear waste policy at the Energy Department's Office of Nuclear Energy in 2022, has previously faced charges in relation to luggage theft. In October 2021, Brinton was charged with stealing baggage worth $2,325 and, in December, faced allegations of grand larceny for stealing a suitcase worth an estimated $3,670, containing jewelry, clothing, and makeup worth $1,700, $850, and $500. Brinton was not jailed in either case. Investigations into the latest charges are ongoing.

The American Mind: A Pronoun of Her Own
The trans movement is attempting to take over women's sports and ballet, claiming that they too can master these forms. While women's rights advocates have fought to protect women's sports, the feminist establishment has been hypocritical in failing to defend Title IX. Men are better at everything quantifiable, but women have unique abilities and cultural achievements that should be protected. The Bud Light commercials starring a male impersonator backfired because men are visual and want to see femininity represented. Women may regret what they are left with if they continue to allow the male takeover of female spheres.

The Epoch Times: Senators Propose Special Oversight Agency for AI, Big Tech
The Digital Platform Commission Act was introduced by Senators Michael Bennet and Peter Welch in order to create a federal agency in charge of regulating digital platforms, with a focus on artificial intelligence. The agency would have the authority to develop and enforce rules for an industry that currently has little oversight. The senators hope to protect consumers, promote fair competition, and serve the public interest. The legislation cites concerns about the impact of social media and AI, and questions the expertise and resources of current regulators. The senators propose modeling the new agency after the FDA and FCC.
The Epoch Times: Are Fears of AI Justified?
Fear of job destruction due to artificial intelligence (AI) is not a new concern. Many industries voice concern about the potential loss of jobs and it is often difficult to imagine what new jobs AI will create in the future. However, history shows that for all the fear expressed at each potential loss of jobs due to technological advancements, disruptive transitions have always ultimately resulted in greater material abundance and creation of new jobs. Developed economies have managed, on average, to provide work for some 94–95 percent of the people who want to work. While AI will bring dislocation and hardship, history suggests that it will also create other, perhaps better, jobs.
