Democrats warn Biden not to make a deal with McCarthy over debt ceiling
President Biden is facing opposition from Democratic lawmakers over negotiations with Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to cut spending and raise the debt ceiling. Senate Democrats are wary of the talks, with some warning against caving to Republican demands for work requirements for needy families and spending cuts, which they say would hurt everyday Americans. Biden is interrupting his trip to the Group of Seven summit in Japan to return to the US for debt limit negotiations, but it remains to be seen if a compromise can be reached.

Republican Governor Vetoes Nevada Gun Control Laws
Nevada's Republican governor, Joe Lombardo, has vetoed three gun control bills supported by Democrats. The state is also considering measures to restrict the sale of firearms in the US. Lombardo's veto comes in response to left-wing lawmakers' attempts to restrict younger people from buying some guns. He also vetoed bills banning those who have committed hate crimes from owning guns and prohibiting possession of so-called "ghost guns". The legislation can be overridden with a supermajority vote.

Fox News: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis expected to launch 2024 presidential campaign next week
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis expected to launch 2024 presidential campaign next week
Ron DeSantis, the Republican Governor of Florida, is expected to enter the 2024 presidential race by filing formal paperwork with the Federal Election Commission next week. He will simultaneously meet with top financial backers in Miami, Florida, and is prohibited from accepting contributions for a presidential campaign unless he has formally declared his candidacy. By filing with the FEC, DeSantis will be free to solicit donations from donors at the gathering in Miami, which would set in motion a likely fundraising blitz. The governor has made a series of moves indicating that a campaign launch would be imminent, including severing ties with Friends of Ron DeSantis, his longtime political state committee, to comply with campaign finance regulations.

The Federalist Papers: 'Grow Up!': Megyn Kelly Blasts Harry and Meghan's 'Near Catastrophic' Paparazzi Chase
'Grow Up!': Megyn Kelly Blasts Harry and Meghan's 'Near Catastrophic' Paparazzi Chase
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle claimed they were pursued by "highly aggressive paparazzi" in a two-hour car chase after attending an awards event in Manhattan. A representative for the couple said the pursuit lasting over two hours, "resulted in multiple near collisions" with other drivers, pedestrians, and two NYPD officers. However, one of the taxi drivers who transported the couple rejected the description of the “chase” as "catastrophic," stating that the danger involved had been "exaggerated." Megyn Kelly questioned how it would be possible for a two-hour car chase to happen in Manhattan, while Mayor Eric Adams expressed skepticism that the Sussexes were chased for that amount of time.

The Economist: For Giorgia Meloni, supporting Ukraine has some useful benefits
For Giorgia Meloni, supporting Ukraine has some useful benefits
Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has maintained the country's support for Ukraine, even as more Italians oppose arming the country than support it. Meloni's hardline stance on war policy risks criticism from her European counterparts, particularly France, which has been especially hostile. However, Meloni sees supporting Ukraine as an opportunity to limit Italy's marginalization in the EU, and to adopt uncompromising conservative policies at home.

Fox News: Major US power source facing extinction thanks to red tape, sparking calls for reform
Major US power source facing extinction thanks to red tape, sparking calls for reform
The National Hydropower Association and energy developers warn that the long and arduous regulatory process for new and existing projects puts the country's power grid at risk. Although hydropower contributes 6.2% of the US's total utility-scale electricity and nearly 30% of total utility-scale renewable electricity, hydropower regulatory hurdles are greater than those facing other carbon-free sources of electricity. A third of the non-federal hydropower fleet has licenses that are set to expire by 2030. Developers take five years on average for new hydro projects to obtain an original license and nearly eight years for operators of existing facilities to relicense. Hydropower proponents warn that permitting reform is needed to streamline hydropower relicensing and licensing to prevent energy developers from investing elsewhere, endangering tens of millions of American's power supply.

Forbes: Burberry Reigns In China But Slams U.K. Government Over Tax Free Shopping
Burberry Reigns In China But Slams U.K. Government Over Tax Free Shopping
Burberry sales rise 10% to $3.7bn in 2022, with operating profits reaching $818m. The company increased underlying sales by 13% in China and opened 60 new stores globally. However, CEO Jonathan Akeroyd is unhappy with the UK government's removal of tax-free shopping for international visitors, leading to luxury sales leaking to other cities like Paris and Milan. Walpole, the UK luxury industry body, has called for tax reform and published a report alongside landlord Cadogan showing the lack of tax-free shopping as a "drag on both London's and the UK’s economic performance". Sales to tourists rose 19% in the UK, but more than doubled in Paris and were up 43% in Milan, according to Akeroyd.

He also highlights John Muir's and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's passion and inspiration for God's creation, and George Fielden MacLeod's compassionate acts for others. Newell believes that there is much to be embodied by embracing the wisdom of Celtic Christianity in reawakening our souls to the sacred in ourselves and all of creation.

Forbes: RSV Vaccine: Here’s What To Know As FDA Advisors Consider Approving Pfizer’s Shot
RSV Vaccine: Here’s What To Know As FDA Advisors Consider Approving Pfizer’s Shot
Pfizer's maternal RSV vaccine, called Abrysvo, designed to protect infants from the common, but potentially fatal, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) by vaccinating pregnant people, is set to be considered by a panel of independent experts for approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The shot, 82% effective at preventing severe RSV disease for the first three months after birth and 69% effective for the first six months, could pave the way for the first RSV vaccine for infants. The panel will consider safety data and the rate of preterm births observed, as there was a slightly higher rate of preterm births among vaccine recipients.

Pfizer's late stage clinical trial, which involved vaccinating nearly 7,400 pregnant people, found that Abrysvo was 51% effective at preventing doctor’s visits for RSV-related illness within the first six months of life, and safety data is also “generally favorable”. The FDA analysts have noted the potential for premature births and the panel's decision carries considerable weight, but the FDA has yet to approve the vaccine and a decision is still months away. The FDA recently approved a rival RSV shot from GSK called Arexvy, which is targeted towards older adults ages 60 and up.

Red State: Gallup: Americans Unhappier Than Ever as Depression Diagnoses Reach Record High
Gallup: Americans Unhappier Than Ever as Depression Diagnoses Reach Record High
Record numbers of Americans, particularly women, young adults, and black and Hispanic people, are being diagnosed with clinical depression, according to a new Gallup poll. The percentage of Americans receiving a diagnosis of depression during their lifetime has risen to 29 percent, and those presently undergoing treatment or experiencing depression has risen to 17.8 percent - the highest rates ever documented by Gallup. The rise in depression is part of a wider global phenomenon, with nearly four in 10 adults aged 15 and older experiencing significant depression or anxiety themselves or having a close friend or family member who suffers from it. The trend has been accelerated by the consequences of lockdowns in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Epoch Times: Repeal the Quarantine Power
Repeal the Quarantine Power
The Public Health Service Act of 1944 grants extensive quarantine powers to the government, which have been abused in the past and during the COVID-19 pandemic. These powers enable tyranny and destroy individual rights, with no real restraint or due process. Even after the lockdown fiasco, these powers still exist at both federal and state levels, and they should be completely repealed to prevent abuse in a free society.

Europe’s Secondary Competition Could Be Max Allegri’s Juventus Salvation
Max Allegri's Juventus faces the Europa League semifinal second leg against Sevilla with the looming threat of potential sanctions and points deductions. Moreover, it would be Allegri’s first piece of silverware in his second stint, and qualification for the Champions League next season remains imperative for the club's summer budget.

Fox News: Criminal cases over killing eagles decline as wind energy dangers increase: report
Criminal cases over killing eagles decline as wind energy dangers increase: report
Criminal cases against those harming protected bald and golden eagles in the US have dropped, despite more permits being given to wind energy companies to kill the animals without legal action. According to a report, around 6,000 eagles could be killed over the coming years as a result of dozens of approved permits, the majority of which are for wind farms. Duke Energy, PacifiCorp and NextEra Energy are among those who have been granted permits. Many wind companies pledge conservation work to offset such deaths, but critics have warned that multiple permits allow the killing of bald eagles without penalty.
