Eastern Oregon counties are supporting a proposed merger with neighbouring state Idaho, bringing the creation of Greater Idaho closer to fruition. A ballot measure in the May 16 Wallowa County election was won by a razor-thin 21-vote margin. While the move has opponents, who claim it would negatively affect the region's economy, proponents of the merger believe joining the larger, less populous state could provide the political stability needed to solve the rural/urban divide. The merger proposal would require approval from both state legislatures, an interstate compact and Congress.
The Epoch Times: Salman Rushdie Warns Free Expression Under Threat in Rare Public Address After Attack
Salman Rushdie has warned that freedom of expression is under its most severe threat in his lifetime, nine months after he was stabbed and seriously injured onstage. He accepted the Freedom to Publish award at the British Book Awards and delivered a video message to the ceremony. Rushdie wore an eye patch, following an attack at a literary festival in New York state last August. Rushdie urged publishers to allow books “to come to us from their time and be of their time” and criticised publishers who change decades-old books for modern sensibilities. He said publishers should allow the reader to choose what to read.

The Epoch Times: Russia Orders Arrest of Prominent Producer, Director Who Criticized Ukraine War
Russian film producer Alexander Rodnyansky and theater director Ivan Vyrypaev have been ordered to be arrested for "spreading false information" about the Russian army. Vyrypaev has been put on the federal wanted list. Another opposition figure, Mikhail Krieger, was sentenced to seven years in prison for justifying terrorism and inciting violence by the Moscow court. He stated that he was being prosecuted for his "anti-war and now openly pro-Ukrainian position."
Euromaidan Press: Explosion on railway in Crimea: several wagons derail
An explosion rocked the railway in Simferopol, derailing five grain wagons and suspending train traffic. No casualties were reported, but approximately 50 meters of the railway track were damaged. The explosion occurred beneath the first wagons of the train, reportedly due to a homemade explosive device.
