The Economist: KAL’s cartoon | May 20th 2023 Edition
KAL's cartoon for May 18th shows a group of people labeled "US Justice Department" chasing after a group of people labeled "Illegals" who are running towards a border labeled "US-Mexican border."
The cartoon seems to comment on the recent immigration crackdowns in the United States, with the Justice Department depicted as aggressively pursuing undocumented immigrants who are attempting to cross the border into Mexico.
Fox News: Budd leads Senate GOP effort to make assaulting police a deportable offense
Sen. Ted Budd is introducing the POLICE Act of 2023, which would make assaulting law enforcement officials a deportable offense. The bill would make illegal immigrants convicted of assaulting an officer eligible for deportation, if the officer was assaulted in the performance of their duties or due to their station as a law enforcement official. Budd says supporting law enforcement includes removing dangerous people who do them harm. The North Carolina Troopers Association supports the bill, which is similar to Rep. Andrew Garbarino's House version that passed this week. The move comes amid a rise in violent crime across major US cities.

The Epoch Times: Rep. Greene Introduces Measure to Impeach Biden
Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has introduced articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden, citing his refusal to enforce immigration laws and secure the US border, which she claims has compromised national security. Greene introduced similar measures against Biden during the 117th Congress, but failed to gain traction, while in total nine articles of impeachment have been presented by Republicans against Biden over the course of his presidency, with the latest being one of a series of similar measures brought by Greene, this time against five officials. Any impeachment would require the backing of Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and the support of 60 senators to succeed, an unlikely prospect.
Newsbusters: CNN Mourns Constitution Blocking Australian-Style Gun Control
The Wednesday CNN Tonight couch discussed gun control and mass shootings in America. Comparing it to other countries, the couch settled on gun ownership as the main culprit for the issue. The solution of Australian-style gun control was suggested, but politics and Constitutional rights hindered any progress.
Red State: FBI Employees Allege Retaliation After They Revealed the 'Political Rot'
Whistleblowers in the IRS and FBI are experiencing alleged retaliation for speaking out against the politicization and abuse of power in these institutions under Joe Biden's administration. The retaliation not only violates the rights of whistleblowers but also deters others from coming forward and helps oppressive regimes maintain their power. The House Committee on the Judiciary, Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, and Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence have released an interim report detailing the FBI's retaliatory conduct against whistleblowers who have spoken out about "politicized rot."
National Review: The Corner: The Wired Love Letter to Mayor Pete
Wired magazine has published a gushing profile of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg that lacks any substantial policy discussion and instead focuses on his faith, masculinity, and Republican criticism. It follows a trend among mainstream media outlets of providing uncritical coverage of Democratic political figures in non-political publications while often overlooking Republican dissent. The Buttigieg profile assumes there are no legitimate Republican concerns and portrays them as opposing democracy and civil rights. The interview is devoid of technological discussion and current issues, making it far removed from the magazine's purpose.

Flag And Cross: Obama Gets Himself Roasted After Sharing What Keeps Him Up at Night: 'Starved for Attention'
Former President Barack Obama is concerned that the media no longer presents a united voice. In an interview with CBS News he bemoaned the fact that, prior to Fox News and other conservative outlets, people got a similar sense of what was true and what was not. His post-presidency foundation aims to return to a common conversation with a common set of facts, despite disagreements on how to tackle issues. Conservative Fox News commentators have described Obama as "starved for attention," arguing that he simply wants his ideas and belief system to be the only set of facts.
Fox News: White House hits back after Manchin sinks Biden nominee picked to oversee gas stove crackdown
Sen. Joe Manchin thwarted President Biden's nomination of Jeff Marootian to lead the DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The White House is still backing its energy nominees. Marootian was nominated in July 2022 and was reported out of committee in December. However, his nomination was returned to the White House, and since then, the DOE has proposed energy efficiency regulations that have come under fire, which may have contributed to Manchin's decision. Manchin has been pushing back on Biden's climate agenda over the last few months.

The Blaze: GOP senator embarrasses Biden nominee for federal appeals court with basic question about Constitution
Senator Kennedy questioned judicial nominee Judge Ana de Alba on the Dormant Commerce Clause doctrine and the broader Commerce Clause from Article 1 of the U.S. Constitution. Judge de Alba was unable to provide satisfactory answers to Kennedy's questions during her hearing before the Judiciary Committee. The Dormant Commerce Clause doctrine prohibits states from passing legislation that burdens or discriminates against interstate commerce, and was the subject of a recent Supreme Court case involving California.

The New American: The Girly Man Cometh: Senator Warns of “America's Manhood Crisis” - The New American
Senator Josh Hawley warns of America's "Manhood Crisis" in which male virtue is deteriorating, leaving the future of the country in jeopardy. The rise in crime, indifference to work, and fatherlessness, in particular, are a reflection of this crisis. Hawley argues that to ensure freedom, the nation must have virtue, which requires personal fortitude and vision, otherwise it will result in a need for masters. The collapse of American manhood is the greatest menace the nation currently faces.
Hawley suggests that the collapse of masculine strength and virtue is a societal barrier that the nation must erect against entropy, human enemies, the forces of nature, time, and all human weaknesses that threaten social life. The modern lad is asked to be a man without clear definitions of manhood or positive guidance. While the answer lies in inculcating virtues, there are proposals to feminize boys further instead. Masculinity is being eradicated from the nation, while China cultivates it in teen boys. The future of America is in jeopardy unless drastic changes are made.
The Epoch Times: Tens of Thousands of Approved Housing Projects at a Standstill Due to Cost Pressures
Developers are putting residential housing projects on hold due to a surge in construction costs, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne. About 30 percent increase in costs combined with a plateau in property prices prompted developers to shelve projects. Almost 16,400 housing projects had been approved but not yet commenced in New South Wales by the end of March, while Victoria accumulated over 10,000 approved dwellings that have not begun construction, with the majority shelved being medium to high-density townhouses and apartments, which are more sensitive to cost increases. The shortfall in housing supply is expected to leave Australia short of 106,000 dwellings by 2027.
Australia's rental market has also been squeezed after potential home buyers, who were priced out of the market, and migrants also began competing for the limited number of available rentals. Most capital city rental vacancy rates remain at near-record low levels, well below the indicative balanced rental market levels. Sydney and Melbourne continued to record the strongest growth in unit rents, highlighting the cities’ future housing shortfalls as Australia continues to welcome migrants. The combined capital city's annual rent increased by 11.7 percent in the year to April was a new record.
Breitbart: Activists Demand Reparations for Latinos for Land Under Dodger Stadium
Activists are seeking reparations for land under Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles that was taken from residents in the 1950s. Buried Under the Blue, a Latino group, has demanded compensation for the land, taken using eminent domain and paid for voluntarily. A similar campaign led to the restitution of Bruce’s Beach, taken from black owners in the 1900s. Critics have said that other groups have been treated worse in California's history, and Black residents of the state are the primary focus of state reparations efforts.

Breitbart: Russia Agrees to Extend Ukraine Grain Deal That Allows Exports by Sea
Russia and Ukraine have agreed to extend a deal allowing Ukraine to ship grain through the Black Sea to countries affected by food shortages, according to Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Black Sea Grain Initiative has facilitated the shipment of over 30 million metric tons of wheat from Ukraine to countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, lowering the price of grain commodities. The extension follows threats by Russia to pull out of any continuation of the agreement if its concerns were not addressed by today.

The Ukrainian government said they shot down 29 Kalibir missiles, two suicide attack drones, and two reconnaissance drones. One missile got through, killing one person in Kostiantynivka. Wounded have also been reported.

The Epoch Times: Cruz Suggests Biden Admin's Russia-Ukraine Policy Hampered By Focus on Securing Iran Nuclear Deal
Senator Ted Cruz accuses the Biden administration of prioritizing a nuclear deal with Iran over aiding Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Cruz claimed that Ukraine requested army tactical missile systems to attack Russia’s base in Crimea, where they were testing Iranian kamikaze drones. However, the Biden administration rejected the request allegedly to avoid causing the death of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces, which would have disrupted another deal with Iran. Cruz criticized the administration’s policy on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, alleging that their interests in aiding Ukraine and achieving a nuclear deal with Iran were in direct conflict.
Fox News: State Dept. promises to punish North Korea if illicit satellite is launched
The US State Department warns North Korea that it will use "a number of tools" to hold them responsible for their illicit satellite launch. If they proceed with their planned launch, it would violate multiple UN Security Council resolutions. Despite North Korea's claims that their satellite is for space-based reconnaissance, concerns persist that the launch will use banned ballistic missile technology. The US remains committed to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and seeks dialogue with Pyongyang without preconditions. The North Korean satellite's capability remains uncertain as South Korean analysts argue that it is too small to capture high-resolution imagery from space.

The organisation praised Lai for his role in defending freedom of speech in Hong Kong through his Apple Daily news agency, calling on editors around the world to support him. The joint statement from international journalists also condemned Lai’s charges against him and criticised the Chinese government’s attempts to control information outside the country. Hong Kong ranked in 140th place of 180 countries in the RSF’s Press Freedom Index 2023.

Forbes: Could 300,000 Job Openings Be Fake? Here's Why Goldman Thinks They Might Be
Goldman Sachs economists suggest that the US Labor Department's monthly poll of employers, JOLTS, may be overestimating the number of job openings in the US by around 300,000, as survey response rates have suffered from a roughly 50% drop since early 2020, as remote and hybrid jobs soared in popularity. Consequently, the JOLTS survey's standard error has now risen by 90% compared to between 2002 and 2013, and the "upward bias from nonresponse" may be impacting the number of reported job openings. The unreliable JOLTS survey highlights an increase in questioning about the reliability of long-trusted labor market measures, including the weekly update on initial jobless claims, which hit an almost two-year-high, after economists Stephen Juneau and Michael Gapen described something as "fishy" in last week's jobless claims reports, suggesting fraud in Massachusetts.
The Epoch Times: Royal Mail Reports Loss of £1 Billion After Year of Strikes
The International Distributions Services has reported that Royal Mail suffered a full-year loss of over £1 billion, with the adjusted operating loss of £419 million because of industrial action, the inability to deliver productivity improvements, a weaker online retail market, and fewer COVID-19 test kits being returned. The non-executive chair of Royal Mail Group, Keith Williams, has welcomed the new agreement with the Communication Workers Union, which includes provisions for joint rebuilding and transformation of the business, pay and profit share of employees, and increased job security. The agreement also includes changes in working practices, attendance policies, and network changes to provide cost efficiencies.
Breitbart: Telecom Giant to Shed 55,000 Jobs, Will Replace Some Humans With A.I.
BT Group plans to cut up to 55,000 jobs by 2030 and replace them with AI, as part of a cost-cutting initiative. The telecom company, which currently employs around 130,000 workers including contractors, will reduce its workforce to between 75,000 and 90,000 by the end of the decade. The cuts will include digitisation, automation and AI as well as 15,000 jobs to build mobile and broadband networks and a further 10,000 jobs to service them. The company will also rely on attrition and will collaborate with union partners throughout the process.
The Epoch Times: Fewer Americans Apply for Jobless Benefits, Labor Market Still Showing Strength
Jobless claims in the US fell by 22,000 last week after a previous spike raised fears that higher interest rates were cooling the labour market. For the week ending 6 May, applications for jobless claims dropped to 242,000. Since the recession, the US economy has added jobs at a record pace and the unemployment rate has dropped to 3.4%, but recent policy decisions have shown signs of cooling the market. In March, job openings fell to their lowest level in two years and US employers added only half as many jobs as expected in February and March.

Forbes: Author Post: The Value Of Living Your Principles
A company's principles are a set of values that shape its culture, affecting everything from communication to talent recruitment and branding. They can make or break a company's success. Principles should be reflected upon honestly and collaboratively, with a list of seven to ten short statements created in order of importance. These should be reviewed regularly in order to maintain their effectiveness in guiding the organization. Principles must be embodied by leadership and excessively communicated to all employees in order to create alignment and harmony.
Flag And Cross: Joe Rogan, Jack Carr Absolutely Roast Miller Lite's 'Weird' Woke Ad: 'It's So Stupid'
Miller Lite's woke campaign feeds bikini ads to worms who convert them into fertilizer for women farmers. The fatuous campaign debuted in March, and has resurfaced thanks to Joe Rogan's talk show, where he called it "weird" and "stupid." Anheuser-Busch InBev is likely grateful that Miller Lite's media disaster forestalled criticism of its own campaign, which has caused a 25 percent reduction in sales for Bud Light. Rogan and his guest Jack Carr criticized Miller Lite for throwing snowflakes a bone instead of targeting their true audience.
Red State: Anti-Woke Actress: Marvel Star Defends Macho Men Unafraid to 'Punch Someone in the Face'
The world is rejecting traditional masculinity and femininity. Actress Evangeline Lilly questions why Hollywood glorifies masculine women and demonizes masculine men and vice versa. She believes in inclusion rather than vilification, but the industry seems keen on only presenting "strong women" as those with emotionless personas, intense career focus, or violent tendencies. Lilly has previously made headlines for attending an anti-COVID mandate rally in Washington and stating her support for bodily autonomy. She believes that fear should not be fought with force and that grace and charity are essential for democracy, justice, and peace.

The Epoch Times: Arsenic: A Known Contaminant in Fluoride Added to the US Water Supply
Fluoride added to public water supplies in the US is largely a chemical byproduct of the phosphate fertilizer and aluminum production industries, which brings the added risk of contaminants, such as arsenic. While fluoridationists claim that it is safe for human consumption as long as the concentration of contaminants in fluorosilicic acid (FSA) does not exceed regulatory limits, FSA is a documented carcinogen and neurotoxin with an assigned maximum contaminant level goal of zero for arsenic, meaning that knowingly contaminating public drinking water with it is a violation of the public trust. According to retired civil and control systems engineer John F. Mueller Jr., who reviewed and updated the technical specifications for a large municipal water utility’s FSA purchasing contract, fluoridation is also inefficient as more than 99.5 per cent of the fluoride that goes into the drinking water to prevent tooth decay never sees a single tooth, while the costs of fluoridation are also high.

The Epoch Times: Lawyers for Derek Chauvin File Petition in Minnesota Supreme Court Appealing Conviction for George Floyd Murder
Derek Chauvin appeals his conviction for the murder of George Floyd on the basis that he was deprived of a fair trial. His attorney argues that the judge’s decision to keep the trial in Minneapolis prevented a fair trial and that one juror's attendance at a civil rights event besides other reasons deprived Chauvin of due process. Chauvin, a former police officer, was sentenced to over 22 years in prison in April 2021.
Fox News: Alabama measure extending statute of limitations for victims of childhood sex abuse stalls in committee
Insurance companies are opposing a bill in Alabama that seeks to extend the time in which childhood sex abuse victims can file lawsuits against their abuser. The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Merika Coleman, has yet to secure a vote from the Senate Judiciary Committee to extend the six-year statute of limitations. The bill aims to allow victims up to 36 years to bring a claim. Critics concern possible liability issues for groups that may have been unaware of the abuse. Fifteen states in the US have lifted statutes of limitations for instances of child sexual abuse.

Forbes: Rafael Nadal Pulls Out Of French Open As Injury Lingers
Rafael Nadal withdrew from the French Open due to an injury to his lower abdomen and upper right leg, marking his 13th withdrawal from a major. Nadal has not played a single match on clay all season, and his fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz is poised to be the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Without Nadal in Paris, No. 1 Novak Djokovic would have an easier path to win a record 23rd major, although Alcaraz will replace him in the rankings on Monday.
