Foreign Policy: Pakistan’s Military Goes Full Throttle Against Imran Khan
Pakistan’s Military Goes Full Throttle Against Imran Khan
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan faces an escalating confrontation with the political establishment as recent developments suggest the military leadership is going full throttle to sideline his party from politics ahead of national elections in October. The military leadership has vowed to use the Pakistan Army Act to prosecute protesters who attacked military facilities after Khan's arrest on corruption charges, warning that "restraint will no longer be exercised." The detentions of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and supporters could weaken the party, but arresting Khan again and holding him for an extended period could deal it a damaging blow.

The Indian National Congress won big in the southern state of Karnataka, dealing a blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which lost control of the state. With six more state elections this year and national polls looming in 2024, the question remains if the Congress party can sustain its momentum. Meanwhile, Bangladesh faced a major cyclone, with initial reports suggesting that 12,000 houses were destroyed in Cox's Bazaar and nearby St. Martin's Island, a local tourist attraction. The island is also dealing with food, water, and power shortages several days after the storm.

Somewhere, Ron DeSantis Laughs Maniacally After Huffington Post Hit Piece Backfires
The media is attacking Florida Governor Ron DeSantis by labelling him more dangerous than Trump. Seibert writes that DeSantis is going to be extremely organized and tactical. His "rapid response team" dismissed the article, pointing out that it makes DeSantis sound awesome. This sort of hit piece is unoriginal and is used to alarm people into thinking that this Republican candidate could be the worst potential president ever. The intelligent voter is advised to ignore the mainstream media's bias and to research the candidates themselves.

The Washington Post and The New York Times refuse to return their Pulitzer Prizes despite the Durham Report, which found no evidence of Russian collusion in the 2016 US presidential election. Republican lawmakers, including Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz, have called for the awards to be returned. WaPo spokesperson said the paper “stands by its reporting” despite the fact that the Durham Report concluded there was no collusion, while the NYT failed to respond to Daily Mail. Conservative sources claim that the left-wing media embraced the Russia collusion hoax soon after President Trump's election because of stage 4 Trump Derangement Syndrome.

The presidential move gives Lasso six months to rule by decree until Congress seats are filled by election, as allowed under Article 148 of the Ecuadorian constitution. Former authoritarian President Rafael Correa, in exile in Belgium after an arrest warrant against him for criminal actions as president, condemned Lasso's use of the constitutional amendment he spearheaded in 2008. Correa called Lasso's move illegal.

The Putrid Underbelly of Woke Capitalism
A shareholder in Berkshire Hathaway was arrested during the annual meeting for questioning Warren Buffett's affiliation with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Bill Gates' association with Jeffrey Epstein. The shareholder, Peter Flaherty, argued that the separation of roles was necessary so that Berkshire “would be less identified with Mr. Buffett’s personal political activities”. The arrest of the shareholder coincided with a series of Wall Street Journal articles exploring Epstein’s calendar and a trove of Epstein emails and other documents, with numerous high-profile people, including businesspersons and philanthropists, being ensnared by a child sex trafficker. There is a concern that whoever controlled Epstein may be controlling the capitalist class.

Breitbart: Canada Prepares to Fight Chinese Interference in June Elections
Canada Prepares to Fight Chinese Interference in June Elections
Canada is prioritizing fighting foreign interference in next month's election with its spy service ordering the prompt disclosure of threats to candidates. This comes as evidence mounts of expansive Chinese government operations to influence Canadian politics. Canada's left-wing government branded a Chinese diplomat, Toronto-based Zhao Wei, persona non grata, last week, expelling him from the country in response to evidence compiled by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) that Zhao had worked to identify potential relatives of a member of Parliament, Michael Chong. Chong accused the Trudeau government of not taking sufficient action to protect Canadian citizens from Chinese transnational repression.

The Trudeau administration announced it would create a Security and Intelligence Threats Task Force (SITE) to investigate evidence of potential foreign interference in upcoming byelections scheduled for June 19. Last year, Safeguard Defenders revealed that the Chinese Communist Party established illegal police stations to persecute anti-communist dissidents abroad, and according to the group, Toronto, British Colombia, and Montreal are all believed to be housing illicit Chinese transnational repression stations. The Chinese government accused Canada of allowing itself to be colonized by the United States and spreading junky information. The NYPD made the first arrests in the free world against the administrators of an alleged illegal Chinese police station abroad in April.

UBS was pushed by regulators to acquire beleaguered rival Credit Suisse in a rescue aimed at preventing financial contagion and a systemic meltdown. However, the numbers disclosed by UBS suggest the deal may be sweeter than rushed due diligence suggests, with the bank expecting a day-one profit of almost $35bn. The deal was agreed within days of Credit Suisse receiving a CHF54bn ($54bn) lifeline from the Swiss central bank.

Los Angeles's Office Market Is in Even More Trouble
A new 4-5.5% transfer tax on all real estate transactions in Los Angeles has caused a reduction in the value of office properties. The tax revenue is meant to help the homeless but may negatively impact city services.

While acknowledging the importance of economic investments, Spanberger emphasized the need to protect American agriculture from foreign adversaries. Reports of CCP-backed purchases of farmland near military bases have heightened concern.

The Epoch Times: Retail Sales Come in Below Expectations After 2 Months of Declines
Retail Sales Come in Below Expectations After 2 Months of Declines
U.S. retail sales rose 0.4% in April at $686.1bn, rather than 0.7% as expected by economists, while March's revised retail sales fell 0.7%, according to the U.S. Census Department. Core retail sales, excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services, recovered 0.7% last month, and retail sales as a whole were up by 0.5% YoY. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs lifted its Q2 GDP estimate by two-tenths of a percentage point to a 2% pace, and the American economy grew at a 1.1% annualized rate last quarter. Consumer spending still seems to have increased as people bought discounted items online and ate out more.

Industrial production grew 1% last month after dropping 0.8% in March, and manufacturing accounts for 11.3% of the U.S. economy. Non-durable products and hard manufactured goods saw gains in output, while furniture stores decreased sales by 0.7%, and electronics and appliance stores tumbled by 0.5%. The rise in spending offset the drag on U.S. GDP growth from retailer inventory liquidation, with spending being boosted by rising wage gains resulting from a tight labor market. Musk predicted that the economy would suffer a hard ride until spring 2024, as firms could increase output instead of drawing down inventory when demand picks back up, but high inflation and interest rates have caused consumers to be more selective in their purchases.

Anheuser-Busch, Bud Light's parent company, is said to be working on replacing their white male employees, promoting a Woke victim mentality and dividing the workforce based on race.

The Los Angeles Dodgers plan to honor the anti-Catholic Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at their 10th annual LGBTQ+ Pride Night at Dodger Stadium on June 16. This has led to a backlash from the Catholic community, including Senator Marco Rubio, who questioned whether Major League Baseball wants to be "inclusive and welcoming" to Christians by awarding a group that "mocks Christians through diabolical parodies of our faith." Bill Donohue of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights noted that the SPI is "known for simulating sodomy while dressed as nuns." CatholicVote called on Catholics earlier this week to contact the Dodgers and demand they cancel the plan to confer the award to the "anti-Catholic hate group."

The Catholic Church in Germany is facing a financial and membership crisis as 40,000 properties, including churches, rectories and community centers, are expected to be lost by 2060. The leadership of the German Catholic Church has been accused of abandoning traditional Christian beliefs and embracing a liberal position, with the Synodal Way proposing radical changes to church teaching, such as the authorization of same-sex unions and the admission of women to holy orders. The progressive trend away from traditional beliefs and a church-state alliance, in which believers pay a church tax, has been attributed to the mass departure of German Catholics from the Church.

Health Experts on Twitter Overwhelmingly Exaggerated Risk of Kids Getting Monkeypox: Study
Medical professionals on Twitter were more likely to exaggerate the risk of monkeypox spreading among children during last summer’s outbreak than to share accurate information, a new study shows. Data from the US and other countries indicate the disease predominantly affects men who have sex with men. Moreover, no evidence shows that schools are a high-risk area for transmission or that children have a heightened risk of infection. Researchers identified 262 posts sent by 188 credentialed Twitter accounts, including those of health professionals and health reporters, between May and October 2022. Of these, just 47 were accurate. The findings emerge following the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently warning that the mpox outbreak “is not over” and could see a resurgence in the coming months.

The Economist: The coming years will be the hottest ever
The coming years will be the hottest ever
Science & technology | The world has a 66% chance of surpassing the 1.5°C limit for global warming in the next five years, according to the World Meteorological Organisation. It is almost certain that within that period one year will be the hottest in human history. The current record, from 2016, was 1.28°C warmer than pre-industrial temperatures. Although this warmer period could contain an El Niño phase – making it temporary, and optimists could point out that – it is also expected to include the resumption of human-driven warming and natural climate variability, making the 1.5°C target increasingly unlikely to be met.

Science & technology | Human beings are leaving genetic material wherever they go; an average of 38 million bacterial cells, half a million yeast cells, and around 10,000 human cells are carried on trainers. At a crime scene, these traces could be used to identify an individual, according to Tracy Prowse from Laurentian University. Meanwhile, the growing demand for dinosaur fossils is being driven by collectors, rather than science enthusiasts, frustrating some palaeontologists. Advances in genetic research are also being applied to determine the authenticity of such fossils. Finally, research suggests that insects could help to convert spent grain from beer brewing into useful animal products, such as feed, at a lower environmental cost.

In a letter to Fed Chair Jerome Powell, the Republicans stated that the Fed's focus on environmental policymaking and research falls outside its statutory mandate. The Republicans argue that the Fed's focus on climate change policy could undermine its independence and distract it from its central mandates of price stability, maximum employment, and managing long-term interest rates. #(economy)
