The Federalist Papers: This Broke Blue State Considers Unemployment Benefits for Illegal Immigrants Amid Title 42's Expiration
This Broke Blue State Considers Unemployment Benefits for Illegal Immigrants Amid Title 42's Expiration
California's SB 227 is set for review, proposing to extend unemployment benefits to undocumented workers in the state. The bill would provide laid-off undocumented workers with a $300 weekly benefit for up to 20 weeks, funded directly from state resources. While the Safety Net for All Coalition estimates that payroll taxes paid by undocumented workers add around $485 million annually to the state's Unemployment Insurance system, the proposed legislation, inclusive of administrative expenses, is projected to cost around $356 million in state funds.

The upcoming review of SB 227 comes at a time of escalating financial pressure for California, as Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced that the state is operating at a far larger deficit than anticipated. Meanwhile, Title 42, a policy implemented during the Trump administration that suspended asylum-seeking rights, has expired, which could exacerbate the border crisis for migrants entering the USA. With California expecting a surge in the state's undocumented population and facing severe economic strains, the question is whether the state can afford to supply unemployment benefits to undocumented workers, or even if they should at all.

Elon Musk’s Attack On George Soros ‘Distressing’ And ‘Dangerous’, Jewish Group Says
Elon Musk's recent tweet comparing fellow billionaire George Soros to a comic book supervillain with ties to Judaism has been called out as an anti-Semitic trope by the Anti-Defamation League . The tweet could fuel anti-Semitic conspiracies and possibly lead to attacks on Soros and the Jewish community, the ADL warned. Soros, a prolific donor to progressive causes, has faced death threats and an assassination attempt in the past . Musk, who is the second richest man in the world, has yet to respond to allegations that his comments were anti-Semitic .

The ADL's CEO Jonathan Greenblatt tweeted that Musk's posts echo historical stereotypes about Jews, while adding that Soros has been the target of anti-Semitic conspiracies due to his philanthropic work and political views . Anti-Jewish hate crimes made up 51% of all religiously motivated hate crimes and 9% of all hate crimes in the US in 2021, despite Jews representing just 2.4% of the population . It emerged soon after Musk's Twitter activity that Soros's hedge fund had disposed of all of its Tesla shares, a move that was described as being unrelated .

Fox News: DeSantis pledges Florida will use 'every resource' to end human trafficking
DeSantis pledges Florida will use 'every resource' to end human trafficking
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has pledged to use every possible resource to put human traffickers out of business and into prison. The state plans to implement a series of bills to combat the problem and support victims. DeSantis blamed the White House for the issue and stated that Florida was "kicking the rear end of the Biden administration" on border security. The Department of Homeland Security's annual report from Oct. 2020 to Sept. 2021 found that annual global profits for human traffickers amount to $150 billion.

DeSantis, a rumored 2024 presidential contender, also criticized the Department of Health and Human Services for "facilitating the forced migration, sale and abuse of foreign children." He plans to impanel a statewide grand jury to examine international human smuggling networks. The Governor plans to strengthen penalties for criminals who prey on victims of human trafficking. He also answered questions concerning his stance on reproductive rights and suggested that he would "clean house top to bottom" in government agencies regarding the Trump-Russia investigation.

Foreign Policy: Ecological Murder Could Soon Be Illegal
Ecological Murder Could Soon Be Illegal
Activists in Brussels placed posters around the city to raise awareness about the legal definition of ecocide. Ecocide refers to the destruction or killing of an ecological system, and activists are pushing for it to be recognized as a crime in the European Union and added to the list of gravest crimes prosecuted by the International Criminal Court (ICC). The posters depicted scenes of environmental destruction, including forest fires and bees dying due to pesticides. While the proposal faces opposition from industry lobbyists and internal disagreements among supporters over its definition, making ecocide a crime would mean holding corporations liable for their environmental impact and protecting the environment through criminal law.

CNN anchor admits Durham report is 'devastating' for FBI — but still finds a way to blame Trump: 'There was a lot of smoke'
CNN anchor Jake Tapper admitted that John Durham's report is "devastating" for the FBI and exonerates Donald Trump in part. He claims that there was "a lot of smoke" which caused the FBI to investigate the allegations into Trump-Russia collusion. Despite the report's conclusion, Tapper still finds a way to blame Trump for the FBI pursuing a case that was tainted by bias.

Special Counsel John Durham's report found no evidence of collusion between Trump's 2016 campaign and Russia, and the FBI's Crossfire Hurricane investigation was seriously deficient. The report reveals unchecked partisan power and politicization of federal law enforcement, indicting the federal government and its unelected bureaucracies, with little reason for Americans to think things have changed. The American Mind: Cell Block

Employers are struggling to work with Gen Z (Zoomers), with 65% firing them more often and 3 out of 4 claiming they're hardest to work with. The challenges are due to a lack of professionalism, excessive entitlement, and addiction to smartphones. These issues are attributed to a culture that celebrates mediocrity, encourages phone addiction, and indoctrinates identity politics. However, it's important for employers to consider what they really need from their employees and whether their demands are reasonable and helpful for their well-being. Ultimately, employers and educators alike should be willing to share solutions and recognize that Gen Z wants meaningful work, community, and fair treatment.

Leaked Documents: Zelensky Planned to Blow Up Russia-Hungary Oil Pipeline - The New American
Leaked Pentagon documents suggest that the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, had planned to blow up a Russian crude-oil pipeline running to NATO member Hungary. Ukrainian officials have not commented on the validity of the documents, while Russia has called on Hungary and the EU to respond to the allegations. Apparent war preparations in the region suggest that further escalation is likely given that other NATO members have signed a mutual defense agreement with Hungary.

Zelensky has travelled to Germany to receive the oldest European unification award, the Charlemagne Prize, that lauded him and Ukraine fighting for “our own freedom and our values: democracy and the rule of law, free speech, and the freedom to create your own destiny.” Ukraine has welcomed Germany’s new €2.7bn military aid package. However, the recent leaks of alleged Ukrainian plans to target Hungarian infrastructure look set to weaken the rhetoric championed by Charlemagne prize winners in promoting Zelensky as a European unifier.

What I Learned About Manhood From The Hong Kong Protestors
Senator Josh Hawley discusses the importance of love and hope as sources of courage in his book, Manhood: The Masculine Virtues America Needs. He argues that a man's focus on self-regard leads to a weak and unfulfilling existence, while a focus on love and sacrifice for something greater than oneself gives birth to hope and true courage. He shares his experience witnessing the courage of young Hong Kongers protesting against the Chinese Communist government in 2019, who faced the possibility of imprisonment or death but continued to hold their ground. Their hope for a free Hong Kong and their belief that their actions would ultimately prevail was a source of inspiration for Hawley.

Former Silicon Valley Bank CEO Apologizes for Bank's Collapse in Senate Testimony
Former Silicon Valley Bank CEO Greg Becker issued a public apology before a Senate committee for the bank's collapse. Two other tech-centric banks, including Signature Bank, also collapsed, prompting regulators to intervene and assume control. The demise of SVB and Signature Bank ranks among the largest bank failures in American history, causing a capital flight from regional banks to big names like JPMorgan. Lawmakers scrutinized Becker, with Sen. Scott accusing the former banker of demonstrating “complete negligence” in his navigation of tightening economic conditions. Becker argued, however, that the Federal Reserve’s “unprecedented interest rate increases in 2022” and its confusing messaging were primary drivers behind SVB’s collapse.

Fund Managers Are The Most Pessimistic They’ve Been This Year—Here's What They're Worried About
Investor sentiment has hit its lowest level of the year, with concerns about the economy leading to the lowest appetite for risk since November, according to a Bank of America survey of fund managers. Exposure to bonds hit a 10-year high and cash allocation a six-month high as investors chase safety over high growth. Stocks are already down more than 2% this month with growing investor worries about inflation, monetary policy and geopolitical instability, adding to apprehension over the federal government's debt ceiling. There were also fears that US could wholly avoid a default, with just 71% of managers believing this compared to 80% the previous month.

A Bank of America survey of 289 fund managers revealed investors' lingering concerns over a decline in the economy, leading to the lowest optimism of 2023. Key risks included government debt, geo-political instability, and inflation. The proportion of investors expecting the economy to strengthen over the next 12 months fell to a rate of 65%, the lowest since the late part of last year. Growing pessimism also led managers to hit a high relative exposure to bonds since March 2009, indicating a preference for safety over high growth. The allocation of cash also hit a 6-month high.
