The Blaze: New York City to turn historic Roosevelt Hotel into asylum-seeker center as migrants overload the area
NYC to open asylum-seeker center at historic Roosevelt Hotel amidst growing numbers of migrants, homeless people and vagrants. The new facility will provide asylum-seekers access to legal, medical, and reconnection services as well as placement, if needed, in a shelter or humanitarian relief center. The move follows New York City sending migrants to counties, sparking emergency orders to protect smaller districts from the influx of people but will require state and federal monetary support to continue care.
Liberty Nation: Title 42 Ends and Flyover Folks Ponder the Resurrection of Bud Light
A 17-year-old boy from Honduras died while in Department of Health and Human Services custody in the US. Heartlanders question the circumstances surrounding his death and point out the troubles on the border.
Flyover folks discuss the rebranding of Bud Light, suggesting professional golfer Jon Daly as the perfect spokesperson to appeal to the “tough, cool, brilliant, hilarious, patriotic American men” who make up the brand’s core demographic. The conversation turns to alternative ideas, including bringing back the old Bud Light pitch dog, Spuds Mackenzie, and using hot chicks in bikinis to promote the beer.

The Epoch Times: CECC Conducts Hearing on Hong Kong Political Prisoners, 75-Year-Old Jimmy Lai Might Spend Life In Jail Under Regime's Law
Sebastien Lai speaks out on the political prisoners and the rule of law in Hong Kong at a U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission hearing. He expresses his concern for his father, Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, and worries that he will spend the rest of his life in jail. Lai described his father as a prisoner of conscience and thanked the CECC for nominating him, along with four others, for the Nobel Peace Prize. Meanwhile, Sebastien criticized Hong Kong for no longer being One Country, Two Systems, and the Beijing regime ruling Hong Kong. He urged the U.S. government to remain focused on his father's trial.
Jimmy Lai, founder and former CEO of Next Media Group, has been imprisoned since November 2020 due to his media business. Before prison, they were all activists for democracy and human rights. In 1989, Lai used his clothing company resources to donate T-shirts to protestors in the Tiananmen Square protest and massacre. He had been a prominent critic of the Beijing government since then. Sebastien Lai criticized the British government for not doing enough for his father's case. In addition, the CCP regime changed the law to stop legal defense. Jimmy Lai and six former senior executives of Next Media Group and Apple Daily were accused of conspiring to collude with foreign forces.
Fox News: Haley says federal abortion rules 'not realistic' given deadlocked Senate
Nikki Haley, a Republican presidential candidate, has stated that she will not pledge to push for federal rules on abortion as it is unrealistic due to a lack of consensus both within Congress and among the American people. While she opposes abortion, she acknowledges that banning all abortions or undoing pro-life laws in states is not honest with the American people. Instead, Haley suggests finding a national consensus on issues such as getting rid of late-term abortions, accessible contraception, more adoptions, and not jailing or rewarding the death penalty for abortions. Haley’s ideas have been criticised by Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the largest pro-life lobbying firm, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
Senator Lindsey Graham, who introduced a bill last year allowing abortion in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy, has supported the idea that federal rules on abortion should exist. However, he has faced criticism from both parties for his bill. While critics have argued that federal rules on abortion would align the United States with countries like China and North Korea, Graham has contended that banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy would be in line with Europe, particularly France, where abortion is allowed up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. Marjorie Dannenfelser from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America has criticised Haley's dismissal of the idea of federal rules on abortion, arguing that 72% of Americans support limiting abortions by at least 15 weeks when the unborn child can feel excruciating pain.
Red State: WATCH: Democrats Violently Riot Against Themselves at Endorsement Convention in Minnesota
Rioting broke out at the Minnesota DFL endorsement convention as supporters of opponent Nasri Warsame stormed the stage during incumbent Aisha Chughtai's speech, causing chaos and resulting in hospitalizations. The violence is believed to stem from racial tensions within Ward 10, as Chughtai is of Pakistani descent and Warsame is a Somali community advocate. Ignoring cultural assimilation and racially divisive messaging may be the underlying cause of the violence, as the base of Warsame's support mostly consist of Somalis who have not assimilated into American culture. This issue is not about race but cultural differences, and the DFL is now threatening expulsions from the party.
The Epoch Times: IRS Takes Steps to Protect Identity of Workers to Deter Personal Threats
The IRS will limit workers' personal ID information on communication with taxpayers due to concerns of threats towards employees by anti-government or anti-tax groups. The move comes after a report found taxpayers had contacted workers outside normal channels. Workers' first names will be removed from communications, but full last names and phone numbers will remain. The IRS has come under increased scrutiny after receiving $80bn in funding for tax collection efforts in climate, health care and tax legislation signed into law by President Biden last year. The IRS-CI unit is set to hire additional staff authorized to carry guns, but will not be used to increase the number of tax audits.

The Epoch Times: Advocates Urge Provinces to Follow Quebec's Lead in Crackdown on Illegal Airbnbs
Quebec's proposed bill to hold short-term rental companies such as Airbnb accountable for illegal listings has been welcomed by advocates who believe that more provinces should follow suit. The bill, if passed, will require firms to ensure listings are certified by the province or face fines of up to $100,000 for illegal rentals. Airbnb has said it is reviewing the proposed changes. Cities such as Vancouver and Toronto have mandatory registration systems, but do not require platforms to validate permit numbers. The proposed law came after calls to limit Airbnb-style rentals, which have removed apartments from the long-term rental market and exacerbated housing shortages.

Fox News: Russian mercenary chief offered to give up Russian troop positions to Ukraine: Report
Russia's Wagner mercenary group offered to provide intelligence on Russian troop positions in exchange for Ukrainian forces pulling back from the city of Bakhmut where they were taking heavy casualties in January. Wagner's owner, Yevgeniy Prigozhin, reportedly made the offer through back channels to Ukrainian intelligence. Wagner often deploys ill-trained soldiers as front-line cannon fodder.
Prigozhin, who has long feuded with Russian military leadership, accused the Russian military of failing to equip his troops in a bitter video on May 5. While Putin has displayed no qualms with Prigozhin lambasting his military commanders, it remains to be seen whether he will tolerate a willingness to betray them outright.

The Epoch Times: Mendicino Explains Previously Inconsistent Remarks About RCMP Shutting Down Covert Chinese Police Service Stations
The Canadian Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino has acknowledged that the RCMP will address any "new" undercover Chinese police service stations that may appear in Canada. This statement comes after Mendicino had previously claimed that the RCMP had shut down all such police stations operating on Canadian soil. However, several Montreal-area community groups that have allegedly hosted secret Chinese police service stations denied this claim, stating that they are still operating. The inconsistency in Mendicino's comments was attributed to the RCMP's operational independence from the federal government. Opposition parties have called for the immediate shutdown of all known unofficial Chinese police stations in Canada.
The New American: Japan, South Korea Grapple With Historical Baggage to Counter China and North Korea - The New American
In March, South Korean President Yoon and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida met in their first bilateral summit in 12 years. They agreed to reboot visits and security dialogues, resolve trade disputes and normalize an intelligence-sharing deal. Both leaders want to overlook historical grievances in order to fend off China and North Korea. There are still deep-seated animosities caused by Japan's occupation of the Korean Peninsula between 1910 and 1945, such as disputes over forced sexual slavery of Korean women, and territorial disputes over islets in the Sea of Japan. Yoon has suggested compensation by a public foundation to heal the rift between both nations, but some Koreans feel the move is forcing an unfair choice.

Fox News: Debt ceiling fight: Republican Medicaid plan shows how to make work requirements work right
The GOP's Limit, Save, Grow Act introduces work requirements for Medicaid that will not only save money but also improve Medicaid recipients' health and wellbeing. The reforms build on the successful 1996 Republican welfare reforms, which reduced welfare caseloads and child poverty and increased household income. Work requirements also create a disincentive to not work and lead to better jobs that provide quality healthcare. Future reforms should emulate the 1996 benefit calculation changes and ensure Medicaid enrollees can combine employer-sponsored and Medicaid benefits to purchase individual insurance. Work requirements and tying government-provided healthcare coverage to healthy behavior are important for maintaining public support for the program, while Democrats may attack the work requirements as being cruel to the poor.
The Epoch Times: Long-Term Inflation Expectations Reach 12-Year High
Inflation is rising rapidly in the US, with the consumer sentiment index dropping to 63.5, compared to its pre-pandemic high of 300. The narrative of inflation being under control by the government is false as official statistics show that the US dollar has lost 14 percent of its purchasing power since 2019 and 35 percent since 2008. The government's failure to contain inflation is evident and its spending has continued to increase, meaning a higher consumption of newly created units of currency. Inflation is a hidden tax, which causes a widespread loss of the purchasing power of salaries and deposit savings, leading to a transfer of wealth from the productive sectors and families to the government. This is further exacerbated by the fact that the state embarks on even more spending during periods of inflation, which creates a boomerang effect and makes the inevitable recession worse.
Forbes: Why Fashion Is Falling Out Of Favor With Gen Z
Gen Z spending power is immense, but the apparel industry is losing out as their attention is drawn to other industries that prioritize life satisfaction. Beauty and toy sales are gaining in popularity as Gen Z prioritize health and wellness and seek nostalgic pastimes. Dining out, going to the movies, and going on vacation are top areas of interest for this group, but prices are increasing, taking up a larger portion of their already tight budget. Resale and fast fashion platforms are performing well with younger consumers, offering endless options at a lower price. Brands and retailers need to focus on self-expression and personalization to cut through the noise and reach Gen Z on a deeper level.

Forbes: The Rumored James Gunn Superman Cast Options Sound Like A Strong Start
Rumors circulate regarding the casting for James Gunn's upcoming Superman Legacy film. Actors David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Jacob Elordi, and Andrew Richardson are rumored to audition for the role of Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan, Emma Mackey, and Samara Weaving are rumored for Lois Lane. There are also rumors that Hoult may be considered for Lex Luthor, who could potentially be portrayed by a black actor.
It is uncertain whether the rumors are true, as Gunn has not confirmed or denied them. The film is not set to release until 2025 at the earliest, and there may be further delays due to the writer's strike. However, there are high hopes for the potential casting choices and the film's success, given Gunn's previous successful endeavors in the superhero film industry. In the meantime, there are rumors that HBO Max may pick up Superman and Lois for further seasons.

The Irish Times published a critical op-ed on Irish women's use of fake tan, but later took it down when it was discovered that the piece was submitted by an AI-generated account. The author used Chat GPT4 to write 80% of the piece and submitted it under a fake identity. The article claimed that spray tanning was a form of racism and cultural appropriation, which the Irish Times found to be a "deliberate and coordinated deception." The incident highlighted a gap in their pre-publication procedures. The editor apologized and pledged to improve in dealing with generative AI.

Breitbart: Tijuana Cops Close Upscale Strip Club After Homicide of U.S. Army Soldier
Authorities in Tijuana shut down Hong Kong nightclub and its adjacent hotel Cascadas in connection with an ongoing investigation into the homicide of a U.S. Army soldier who died from an apparent drug overdose on May 11. While authorities have not released much information, it is known that the club owners refused to share the videos from inside the bar with authorities, thus interfering with the investigation. This is not the first time bar trips to Baja California have ended in disappearances or homicides.
In April, authorities carried out multiple raids at a bar called Shots and another one called Copeo in the city of Mexicali, concerning the disappearances of up to seven bar patrons. The local newspaper Zeta revealed that they had arrested two individuals that may have been linked to the Sinaloa Cartel in those cases. The shutdown of Hong Kong nightclub has sparked questions about the involvement of drug cartels in the area.

Developed to protect the global banana industry from the Panama disease which has impacted Cavendish banana production throughout Asia, QCAV-4 was developed using a single gene, RGA2, taken from a wild banana variety that is completely resistant to the disease. According to the scientists behind the new variety, QCAV-4 has the same shelf life and appearance as the Cavendish banana and is not expected to have a different taste. The banana is currently being assessed by the government's Food Standards Australia and New Zealand and the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator, with a decision expected in around nine months.

Forbes: End Of Google’s Dominance? Stock Gets Rare Analyst Downgrade Over AI Fears
Loop Capital downgraded Alphabet's stock rating from a buy to a hold citing how AI chatbots could cause behavioral changes that make users less likely to rely on traditional search engines. The analysts set a $118 target for Alphabet shares and placed a "ceiling" on its valuation due to the shift among users as a competitive force against its dominance in connecting users to information. This comes despite analysts such as Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, UBS, and JPMorgan reiterating their buy ratings for Alphabet in notes last week.
In contrast to Alphabet's downgrade, Loop Capital upgraded Facebook and Instagram parent Meta's stock from a hold to a buy with a $320 price target indicating 37% upside in what would be the stock's highest price since January 2022. Shifting macroeconomic tides and faith in Instagram Reels and Meta's AI push in advertising all serve as tailwinds for the stock, according to the strategists. Meta shares rallied 1% in early trading.
