The Economist: Recep Tayyip Erdogan scored well ahead of his challenger as Turkey voted
Recep Tayyip Erdogan scored well ahead of his challenger as Turkey voted
Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan received almost 50% of the vote in the presidential election on May 14, while his main rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, only secured 44.9%, which is below what pollsters and Kilicdaroglu himself expected. This means a runoff is now likely to take place on May 28. In the parliamentary vote, Erdogan’s bloc – known as the People’s Alliance – received 45.8% of the vote, earning a comfortable majority in the assembly.

Spectator USA: Erdoğan appears set for a runoff
Erdoğan appears set for a runoff
President Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has suffered a major blow as their longtime opponent Kılıçdaroğlu has united six opposition parties as a united candidate and has come perilously close to unseating Erdogan. Erdogan used to be referred to as “the Sultan” by his supporters and has been accused of being a dictator by his opponents due to his handling of the Turkish media and crackdown on political opposition in the aftermath of the failed 2016 military coup. However, he has continued to garner support from the conservative and religious Anatolian heartland of Turkey.

With results revealing that neither Erdogan nor Kılıçdaroğlu have managed to break the 50 percent threshold, it’s up to the ultranationalist Sinan Oğan with about 5 percent of the vote to potentially change the run-off in Erdogan’s favor, leading to questions surrounding the future governance of Turkey. Erdogan's social conservatism, economic achievements, and provincial popularity have won him praise from working-class, small-town Turks, but that doesn't change the fact that the AKP's shrinking support means Erdogan's grip on Turkey's governance will rest on the economic future of the country. The Reis has already attempted to leverage his position by promising to hike state workers pay by 45 percent, however, the stakes are high and the final result could determine Turkey's future relationships with the EU, Russia and the Middle East.

Nobody but Kamala Laughs at Awkward Moment - Now Some Wonder Why She’s Acting So Strange
Vice President Kamala Harris' speech at the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics event drew criticism as she spoke in an accent while recounting a story about her mother. Some Twitter users described her behavior as bizarre and contrived, asking if she was on something or had a coconut fall on her head. Others argued that her behavior seemed normal and that she was just an ordinary human being talking and gesturing. Harris' current and former aides have noted that she acts differently behind the scenes than she does in public.

Natalee Holloway Case Gets Major Update After Gov't Makes Decision on Fate of Top Suspect
Joran van der Sloot will be extradited from Peru to stand trial in the United States on charges of extorting money from the family of Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old who disappeared in 2005 during a graduation trip to Aruba. Van der Sloot proposed to reveal the location of Holloway’s remains in exchange for $250,000. Her mother wired $15,000 to a bank account he held in the Netherlands and gave him another $10,000 in person. After receiving the initial payment, van der Sloot accompanied a lawyer to the site where he claimed to have buried Holloway’s remains. However, the information he provided was “false,” according to the indictment. Holloway was declared legally deceased in 2012 and the whereabouts of her remains are unknown. Van der Sloot is serving a 28-year prison sentence for the 2012 murder of Stephany Flores, another young woman. Her killing led to the Holloway investigation being reopened.
