The Imaginative Conservative: Kant's Imperative
Kant's Imperative
long argued that what seems like our action in seeking happiness is a mere blind obedience to inclination.) In order to establish the moral law, therefore, we shall have to locate a moment in this natural sequence of psychic motion when we break its lawlike regularity, when we interrupt the playing out, the fulfillment of our desires—that is, when we act otherwise than nature would have it, against our inclination. Moreover, for an action to be moral, it must be due to some other cause than natural inclination. This other cause must reside in our rational nature—since morality has to do with reason. A moral action, then, is one which is done not out of natural inclination but out of reason. I know this seems very abstract; but obey reason we must, if we are to believe in our own freedom. I am told I must conclude, but permit me to add one more word on happiness. I think that Kant’s theory of the relation between happiness and morality is his deepest. For he maintains that duty is not the obstacle to happiness; on the contrary, duty makes happiness possible by making our freedom possible. This is why he speaks as he does of freedom at the very outset of the Groundwork: “Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the oftener and more steadily we reflect on them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me.” It is for the moral law, Kant thinks, that we maintain our dignity, our respect for ourselves. Is it too deeply philosophical to say that the repugnance we feel against being determined mechanically by natural inclinations comes from a dormant realization of our own worth, of the independence of our own will, its freedom from the tyranny of nature? I leave you with this thought, though duty binds. .
