Times Of Israel: Blinken starts Mideast tour in Turkey in bid to prevent escalation into regional war
Blinken starts Mideast tour in Turkey in bid to prevent escalation into regional war
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visits Turkey to address escalating tensions in the Middle East, including the Israel-Hamas conflict. Blinken meets with Turkish President Erdogan to discuss exerting influence on Iran and its proxies, humanitarian aid for Gaza, and planning for postwar reconstruction. The war originated from a Hamas-led terrorist attack on southern Israel, resulting in significant casualties and Israeli retaliation. The immediate difficulty of Blinken's mission is highlighted by rocket attacks from Lebanon's Hezbollah and escalating conflicts in the Red Sea. The US seeks Turkish support for reconstruction efforts as well as Turkey's ratification of Sweden's NATO membership. Blinken will also visit Greece, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Israel, the West Bank, and Egypt.
