The Imaginative Conservative: The Church Against the State
The political right is undergoing significant upheaval, with traditional alliances breaking down and new factions emerging, such as populists and nationalists. This fragmentation reflects a rejection of long-held conservative beliefs about the separation of economics and politics, as both spheres increasingly intertwine in a mass culture dominated by elite interests.
To address these challenges, the concept of subsidiarity is proposed as a foundational principle for a viable conservative movement. Unlike the modern understanding of state intervention, subsidiarity emphasizes a hierarchical social order that prioritizes the common good through the fulfillment of lower associations. This alternative framework seeks to counteract the oligarchic tendencies of contemporary politics and economics, aiming to restore a just society rooted in community and solidarity.
