Gazprom's shadow looms over one of the French Riviera's most luxurious villas
Russian gas giant Gazprom is being investigated by the French justice system over suspicions of "aggravated money laundering" involving a luxurious villa on the French Riviera. The villa, once owned by Zairean dictator Sese Seko Mobutu, is believed to have been acquired by Gazprom through various companies. Documents have shown that part of Gazprom's revenue is also used to finance a private militia in Ukraine. Le Monde has discovered that although the villa is officially owned by a Russian-Armenian businessman, Gazprom still maintains links with the property through Gazprombank and an offshore company connected to a Gazprom executive. If it is found that the property was used to conceal the true owner, it could be confiscated. The villa is estimated to be worth over €200 million and is at the center of complex financial arrangements involving Gazprom and individuals close to Putin.
