Le Monde: Protectionism, a political history of the US from George Washington to Donald Trump
Donald Trump embraces high tariffs as a means to rejuvenate the U.S. economy, viewing trade as a zero-sum game. His protectionist stance contrasts with traditional free trade principles, as he prioritizes maximizing exports and minimizing imports to assert dominance over rival nations.
Trump's rhetoric around tariffs reflects a mercantilist philosophy, suggesting that trade deficits indicate national weakness. This perspective has led him to reject international trade agreements in favor of direct negotiations, emphasizing a combative approach to economic relations.
