Geopolitical tensions could permanently decline economic growth in Africa. The continent's poorest countries also lack economic freedom. African policy-makers should follow the advice of reformers and economists like George B. N. Ayittey, who emphasized the importance of individual rights and entrepreneurship in alleviating poverty. On The Water: Chesapeake Striped Bass Reproduction lowest in 10 years
The 2023 Maryland Department of Natural Resources Young-of-Year Striper Survey reveals that there has been a below-average spawn for the fifth consecutive year, with this year being the worst since 2012. Mild and dry winter conditions hindered the spawning success of striped bass and other anadromous species. The DNR is working with other coastal states to rebuild the population and encourages anglers to practice proper catch and release techniques to protect the current stock. The warm winters are affecting the striped bass spawn by reducing snowmelt to cool the rivers and altering zooplankton production. The Maryland DNR measures the success of the striped bass spawn through an annual survey in four major spawning areas, documenting year-class success and abundance of other fish species in the Chesapeake Bay. The survey showed encouraging results for menhaden and bay anchovy abundance, which are vital food sources for other species.
