Unshockingly, Mitch McConnell weighed in on Kevin McCarthy being ousted yesterday as the House Speaker and suggested that the House needs to get rid of the Motion to Vacate.
Here’s what he said:
This is exactly what Nancy Pelosi did when she was speaker – she removed it altogether. So it’s not really surprising that Mitch McConnell would support dumping it. It should be surprising, but it’s not given how RINO he is most of the time and how much he loves power.
As far as my take, I’m okay with them reforming the rule by making it harder to employ after watching Gaetz use it yesterday. But getting rid of it altogether is just ridiculous and something only a true authoritarian would do. While this was not one of them, there are scenarios where it might be useful in getting rid of a truly bad speaker.
