The House of Representatives has just convened on Capitol Hill after Speaker Kevin McCarthy told the Republican caucus that he would hold a vote today on the motion by Matt Gaetz to vacate the speaker.
McCarthy said he would hold the vote in the first series of votes, which may be around 1:30PM-ish.
You can watch the floor proceedings below:
As I said in the last post, there are at least five members willing to vacate the chair, which would likely be enough to oust McCarthy. Those members are Gaetz, Crane, Good, Biggs, and Burchett. This list is as of just a few moments ago:
As I also pointed out, Democrats will not be helping McCarthy today to either table the vote or support him. McCarthy refused to cut a deal with them, which is laudable on his part.
UPDATE @ 2:03PM: Chad Pergram says the House will try in about 20 minutes to table the motion to vacate FIRST. It’s not an effort by McCarthy, but by his loyalists. If they fail, then the vote to vacate is the next.
UPDATE @ 3:27: Based on the current number of members in the House, 214 is the number needed to remove McCarthy:
OK, so here’s McCarthy’s current status.
House Rs expected to have 219
House Ds expected to have 208
That would be 214 to remove McCarthy. So McCarthy can only lose 5 votes.
Biggs, Gaetz, Good, Crane, Rosendale and Burchett have said they will vote against McCarthy. That’s six right there.
Buck, Mace, Mills, Spartz and Davidson have all voted against tabling.
McCarthy is in deep trouble.
