Governor Tim Walz’s former Command Sergeant Major, Doug Julin, told CNN today that Walz quit on his battalion which was headed to Iraq.
In short, Julin says Walz knew about the coming Iraq deployment and let him know a couple of months before he actually quit that he had put in a bid for Congress but he wasn’t nominated. The following month or so, Walz said that he still hadn’t been nominated and was going to stay with his battalion and go to Iraq.
But then in June of that year, Julin says Walz went over his head by two levels and got someone to back him for retirement. Julin says Walz knew the proper procedure and still went over his head, probably because Walz knew he would refuse the retirement request since the deployment was happening soon.
So yes, Julin says Walz quit on his battalion and wasn’t happy about it.
