Governor DeSantis this morning was asked about Trump’s comments on his 6-week abortion ban, where Trump suggested that ‘many people’ didn’t agree with the abortion ban and thought it was ‘too harsh’:
DeSantis responded by saying “protecting an unborn child when there’s a detectable heartbeat is something that probably 99% of pro-lifers support.”
DeSantis said the bill had all the exceptions that people talked about and hit Trump for not saying if he’d have signed it:
I think that as a Florida resident, he didn’t give an answer about ‘would you have signed the heartbeat bill’ that Florida did. It had all the exceptions that people talked about, the legislature put it in. I signed the bill, I was happy to do it. He won’t answer whether he would sign it or not.
I get that Trump wants to leave his options open so that he can negotiate with Congress on this in the future. However given his comments on Sunday (mentioned above), I think Trump needs to clarify his position on abortion because it sounds like he may only be against partial birth abortion and not something as early as six weeks. That would be a big deal in the pro-life movement. If it’s true that he’s not part of the 99%, it may explain why he doesn’t want to give his actual position so as not to turn away potential pro-life voters.
