Former Trump adviser Steve Cortes has just announced today that he’s no longer supporting Trump and is backing Governor DeSantis for 2024. He explained why on Fox Business:
In short, Cortes points out that polls indicate that most do not want to see a rematch between Trump and Biden, that nobody liked it and we know the ending. He says that NBC News polling shows that 70% don’t want Biden to run again and AP polling shows the same high percentage against Trump running.
When asked about the polling about DeSantis losing to Trump, he responded by saying:
“First, it’s very early in the process and he has not entered. I will be the first to admit that Donald Trump has dominated Republican politics – by the time we get to 2024, for almost a decade. It is a battle to overtake him. …And remember this, I think this is key. It is a state by state race and the state polling, even right now, is much tighter than the national polling shows. But don’t get too complacent about what polling shows right now.
I was in this building, New Hampshire primary night of 2020. If you remember, Joe Biden had lost Iowa and lost New Hampshire and was declared dead. I was on a panel on the air and everyone said he’s over. I said I’m not so sure, he’s got a South Carolina strategy. Well he ended up winning the nomination…
With all this hoopla around DeSantis, I’ll be glad when he finally announces. And we’ll get to see of the optimism of Cortes is accurate or not.
I do think it’s a mistake to count DeSantis out yet, especially since he hasn’t announced. But we shall see.
