There’s been a shooting at the Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis, Minnesota and two people are reported dead with many more injured.

The shooter, dressed in all back and armed with a rifle, may still be at large.

MINNEAPOLIS: 509 W 54th St, Annunciation Church – Police are responding to an active shooter call. Police are reporting 20 victims. A man dressed in all black and armed with a rifle was reported at the scene. EMS has requested a Mass Casualty Response and fire crews are bringing in additional resources.

Crews report four critical victims so far and are still collecting casualties at Annunciation Church. EMS units from North Memorial and Allina are assisting. Authorities say a bomb may have been placed inside the building. Two people have been confirmed deceased at this time.

EMS reporting they have transported 12 victims from the scene. At least two victims were reported deceased inside the church. Additional EMS units responding have been cancelled as they have plenty of resources in staging. A reunification point is being setup at this time. At this point there is no updates on whether police have located the shooter.

The shooter has been contained by police and is no longer a threat:

Police confirm the shooter at Annunciation Church, 509 W 54th St, is “contained” and there is no active threat to the community. Drivers and residents are asked to avoid W 54th St between Lyndale and Nicollet Ave while emergency crews assist victims. Families of children at the school should go to the reunification site at Annunciation School, 525 W 54th St.

Via Star Tribune, a woman said shooter ‘pepper-sprayed’ bullets through the stain glass from outside the building:

An Annunciation parent who was sitting in the back pew at the 8:15 a.m. Mass said students were packed into the pews when a shooter opened fire outside the building with some kind of semiautomatic weapon.

“He just pepper-sprayed through the stained-glass windows into the building, 50 to 100 shots,” said the parent, who did not want his name used. “He killed two kids.”

“This is terrible,” he said. ”This is evil. I don’t know how you defend against this.”

Here’s more of the sad details via Star Tribune, including how a 10-year-old boy was shot in the head:

According to emergency dispatch audio, medics reported transporting a 10-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the head. Additionally, “We have two patients with gunshot wounds to their head in front [of the church]. … we have a critical [victim] in the rear of the church.”

Children’s Minnesota has five kids in treatment. The hospital said in a statement: “Children’s Minnesota is aware of the recent tragic shooting in Minneapolis. Our teams are trained to respond in times of crisis, and are fully prepared to care for impacted children. Currently, five children are admitted to our hospital for care. We will not share more details to respect the privacy of our patients and families.”

Police are reporting in a press conference that two children were killed in the pews where they sat, 17 others were also injured, 14 of which were children, and two of those children are in critical condition.

They also report that the shooter was male and in his 20s. They are now searching for a motive. They say he had a rifle, shotgun and pistol, and shot all three of them.

Via Star Tribune, the hospital gives additional details on the wounded, says seven were in critical condition and four required an operating room:

11:22 a.m. – Dr. Thomas Wyatt, chair of emergency medicine for Hennepin Healthcare, said 11 people were brought to HCMC this morning. Of them, he said two were adults and nine were children. Of the 11, seven were in critical condition. He said four of the 11 required an operating room. He said the emergency room staff received the first page alerting them to a mass casualty event at 8:46 a.m., the second mass casualty alert they had received within 24 hours.

“These incidents are never easy,” Wyatt said.
