NextImg:[UPDATE: GOP FURY AGAINST GAETZ] – Speaker McCarthy to bring up Gaetz’s motion to oust him SOON

Today will be the big day to see if Kevin McCarthy can survive Matt Gaetz’s motion to oust him from the speakership, according to breaking reports.

McCarthy told his Republican caucus this morning that he will bring it up for a vote today and that could come in the news few hours.

Here’s more via The Hill:

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) will bring up Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-Fla.) move to oust him on Tuesday, moving quickly to consider the motion to vacate the chair.

McCarthy could have brought up Gaetz’s motion any time within two legislative days after Gaetz made the move on Monday evening. But the Speaker told House Republicans in a conference meeting on Tuesday morning that he would bring it up later in the day, according to multiple GOP members leaving the meeting.

“He wants to get it out of the way, he doesn’t want to wait, and he’s gonna run on his record,” Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said.

The earliest the motion could come up is when the House starts considering legislative business at noon. Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) said the vote will come up during the chamber’s first vote series of the day that starts at 1:30 p.m.

There would likely be a move to table the resolution to oust McCarthy or refer it to committee before any vote on the underlying resolution.

In related news, McCarthy called Hakeem Jeffries last night after Gaetz put the motion to vacate on the floor, according to DC Examiner:

McCarthy made a Monday evening phone call to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who might be his best chance at keeping the speakership, according to Punchbowl News. But getting Democratic support won’t be an easy feat, and the optics for Republican voters may cause further problems.

This is something Democrats are taking seriously. Jeffries and his leadership team reportedly met Monday night to discuss the possibility. But the Democratic leaders are of the belief that they shouldn’t bail McCarthy out. It is up to Jeffries, though.

I don’t like the idea of enlisting Democratic support to keep the speakership because of what McCarthy might have to give up in order to secure such a deal.

But it is true that Republicans have a very small majority and it remains to be see whether McCarthy can survive. He can only afford to lose around three votes, if my math is correct.

UPDATE: It sounds like Rep. Hakeem Jeffries won’t have McCarthy’s back today in the big vote on ousting him:

From what I read, there are five members willing to vote to oust McCarthy. I don’t know if he can survive this…
