


A judge in Florida just invalidated Governor DeSantis congressional map and sent it back to the legislature to be redrawn.
The judge, appointed by Gov. Rick Scott back in 2018, ruled that the new map resulted in the “diminishment of Black voters’ ability to elect their candidate of choice.”
The judge wrote, according to Politico, that the new map violated the Florida constitution.
The new map drawn by DeSantis got rid of gerrymandered district 5, which had elected Rep. Al Lawson. This is what the district used to look like (it’s the purple one across the top):

Politico writes that “Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd, in a text message, said that he disagrees with the decision and that the state will appeal the ruling to the state Supreme Court.”
