The Department of Defense is sending 200 Marines, based in North Carolina, to the state of Florida to aid ICE in its “interior immigration enforcement mission”.
Here’s the news via The Hill:
The Trump administration is sending some 200 Marines to Florida to aid Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in its deportation raids in the state, the U.S. military announced Thursday.
The Marines, which will come from Marine Wing Support Squadron 272 based in New River, N.C., will support ICE in its “interior immigration enforcement mission” via “critical administrative and logistical capabilities at locations as directed” by the agency, according to a statement from U.S. Northern Command (Northcom).
The release noted that the Marines are just the “first wave” of service members to help ICE in its deportation efforts, with other deployments expected in Louisiana and Texas.
Northcom stressed that service members participating in this mission will perform “strictly non-law enforcement duties” within ICE facilities, with roles focused on administrative and logistical tasks.
“They are specifically prohibited from direct contact with individuals in ICE custody or involvement in any aspect of the custody chain,” according to the statement.
I know what the first line says, but I can find no evidence that these Marines will be aiding ICE with deportation raids. I can’t say exactly what “critical administrative and logistical capabilities at locations” mean, but it doesn’t sound like ICE raids to me. It could be, but that’s not clear, which is why I take issue with The Hill’s first line.
This is the Pentagon’s full statement:
Approximately 200 Marines from Marine Wing Support Squadron 272, Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, are conducting a movement to Florida, to augment U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) interior immigration enforcement mission with critical administrative and logistical capabilities at locations as directed by ICE.
Responding to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) request received May 9, 2025, the Secretary of Defense approved a mobilization of up to 700 Active, National Guard, and Reserve component forces operating under Title 10 authority.
These Marines are the first wave of U.S. Northern Command’s (USNORTHCOM’s) support of this ICE mission. Other support locations will include Louisiana and Texas. Service members participating in this mission will perform strictly non-law enforcement duties within ICE facilities. Their roles will focus on administrative and logistical tasks, and they are specifically prohibited from direct contact with individuals in ICE custody or involvement in any aspect of the custody chain.
I’m just not seeing anything about ICE raids. In fact, it seems to suggest the opposite. I do hope that they help protect our brave ICE agents out in the field, but I can’t say with any certainty that this means that.
