Rep. Jim Jordan, who is also chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee, is seriously considering a run for speaker, according to a report by Politico.
They say he’s having conversations with people and could announce a run by the end of the week, but that it is by no means imminent.
Politico notes the biggest thing that could stymie Jodan among moderates was his role in ousting Speaker John Boehner years ago:
Rep. Jim Jordan is having conversations with House GOP allies as he seriously entertains a bid for speaker, two Republicans with direct knowledge told POLITICO.
A person familiar with the situation said an announcement that Jordan will throw his hat into the ring for speaker not necessarily imminent, but could formally come by the end of the week.
Jordan, who once challenged McCarthy for the speakership before becoming his biggest defender among conservative hardliners, has grown in popularity with the conference in recent years, but some centrists and rank-and-file members may be cool to the idea of his ascension given his role in helping force out former Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).
Jordan is one of the few people that I think could possibly pull off a run for speaker.
Because of his status under Kevin McCarthy as Judiciary Chair, and his enthusiastic support of McCarthy, I think Jordan has somewhat bridged the gap between moderates and conservatives and could possibly muster enough votes to get to 218. But this undoubtedly won’t be easy by any stretch of the imagination.
