President Trump is threatening to primary Thomas Massie to get him out of Congress for being an ‘automatic NO vote’ on the new continuing resolution that doesn’t cut any spending.
Here’s what Trump said late last night:
Thank you to the House Freedom Caucus for just delivering a big blow to the Radical Left Democrats and their desire to raise Taxes and SHUT OUR COUNTRY DOWN! They hate America and all it stands for. That’s why they allowed MILLIONS of Criminals to invade our Nation. Sometimes it takes great courage to do the right thing. Congressman Thomas Massie, of beautiful Kentucky, is an automatic “NO” vote on just about everything, despite the fact that he has always voted for Continuing Resolutions in the past. HE SHOULD BE PRIMARIED, and I will lead the charge against him. He’s just another GRANDSTANDER, who’s too much trouble, and not worth the fight. He reminds me of Liz Chaney before her historic, record breaking fall (loss!). The people of Kentucky won’t stand for it, just watch. DO I HAVE ANY TAKERS??? Anyway, thank you again to the House Freedom Caucus for your very important vote. We need to buy some time in order to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE. Unite and Win!!!
Massie really does find a reason to vote against all things Republicans, but it wouldn’t be a big deal if Republicans could win more elections and get a bigger majority. Also, Trump pulled a number of House Republicans into his administration, which shrunk the majority down to basically 3 or 4 votes. We are still waiting on those races to happen to get back those House votes. Maybe by September?
Massie isn’t wrong about the fact that Republicans never cut spending, though, and this ‘clean’ CR doesn’t either. But we can’t really do much in the way of cutting spending with this CR because we don’t have a big enough majority to do it. Republicans only have 53 votes in the Senate and nothing short of reconciliation will make it past the filibuster, and that’s being held for the budget later this year.
I get why Trump is frustrated with Massie, because this Republican from Kentucky makes his job all that much harder. Do I think Massie should vote for this CR? Yeah, probably. But then all the other Republicans should too and if they did, this wouldn’t be an issue!
At the end of the day I think that Massie shouldn’t be primaried because he’s the one Republican who sticks to his principles more than any other. He’s frustrating to deal with but he’s like the conscience of the House Republican caucus reminding them they need to cut spending, big time.
