The other day we told you that Walmart says it will begin raising prices because of President Trump’s tariffs, claiming it is too much for them to ‘absorb’:
Walmart, known for its low prices, will pass some of those costs onto the consumer. If Walmart can’t hold the line, it’s hard to see how other retailers might be able to.
“We’re wired for everyday low prices, but the magnitude of these increases is more than any retailer can absorb,” Walmart CFO John David Rainey told CNBC on Thursday.
“It’s more than any supplier can absorb. And so I’m concerned that consumer is going to start seeing higher prices. You’ll begin to see that, likely towards the tail end of this month, and then certainly much more in June.”
President Trump was not happy with these comments from Walmart and said they could absolutely eat these tariffs and not pass them on to the consumer:
Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain. Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS last year, far more than expected. Between Walmart and China they should, as is said, “EAT THE TARIFFS,” and not charge valued customers ANYTHING. I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!!!
