Nobody realized that 20 Republicans would vote against Jordan’s nomination for House Speaker, but that’s what happened and now the House is in recess as Jordan tries to win over enough votes.
According to what I’ve read, Jordan would prefer to whittle away at the ‘no’ votes as opposed to holding another Republican caucus meeting.
According to Jake Sherman…
JORDAN fell WAY short — 20 votes — the largest margin so far this Congress. 16 speaker votes, Jordan had the most defections.
There were some surprises — Granger, LaMalfa. perhaps some of those are flippable. But there are many who have made clear that they may not vote for Jordan on the second ballot.
And people like @RepMcCaul are saying this will be hard to climb back from. he told this to @maxpcohen
General consensus among top Jordan figures is that he gains little by going to House GOP conference meeting right now. Will just be a useless griping session — he’s probably right about that.
he has to work these people over one on one. But it’s a very tall task. he has to keep his first ballot support and then also work over the no votes.
20 defections is a HUGE hill to climb….
Chad Pergram adds…
After the vote, former Speaker McCarthy said not to read too much into this losing vote. He said it’s close to where he was on his first go round and he seemed optimistic they could get enough votes.
There’s no word as of yet when the House will reconvene to begin voting again. Hopefully most of what we saw was just Republicans wanting to make a point and they’ll get behind Jordan soon.
UPDATE: Another round of votes will likely happen today, according to the spox for Jim Jordan:
