Governor DeSantis says local governments have become too big and that he will be proposing in the future how to get rid of property taxes in the state of Florida, suggesting it will be on the ballot in 2026.

He railed against property taxes from both a practical and philosophical point of view, arguing that older people are really getting pinched by these taxes and that is a big problem.

Here’s some of what he said via Florida’s Voice:

“You work hard, you purchase land, a home, maybe you pay off a mortgage – at what point are you free and clear? Property tax says that you never really own your property, because you have to pay rent to the government.”

“You have senior citizens that are on fixed incomes. The home they bought for $200,000, 30 years ago, is now worth $1.3 million, and they have to pay more taxes.”

“The homestead exemption is too weak to protect people. That’s a problem, philosophically, but operationally – people are getting pinched from these property taxes.”

“People need relief from that… we want people to have a discussion about it. That’s why this would be something on the ballot in 2026.”

“That’s one of the reasons we want to do DOGE on local governments – there’s a huge problem of growth of local governments… let’s get in there, let’s look at this and be transparent about it. Taxpayers will be able to identify ways they can spend less.”

“There is no appetite to do things at the state level that will increase any of our taxes… we are actually looking to eliminate the tax on business rent.”

If you think Florida’s population is growing now, just wait until they eliminate property taxes. It’s going to skyrocket.
