Fox News is reporting that New York state Democrats are trying to keep the seat of Elise Stefanik open until they hold elections in June, which means it may not be filled until possibly the fall.
Republicans in the House currently have a very slim three-seat majority and need all the votes they can get to pass a budget through the reconciliation process.
Current law in New York states that once Stefanik is confirmed for UN Ambassador and her seat is open, they have 90 days to hold an election to fill the seat.
But they are trying to change the rules to delay an election until the summer.
Speaker Johnson responded to this, calling it “open political corruption” by state officials:
He’s absolutely right. Instead of trying to selfishly change the law just to hurt Republicans, they need to obey the law and let the chips fall where they may.
