Yesterday we reported that Russia was said to be preparing to launch an ICBM at Ukraine and that’s what happened overnight. They also fired a hypersonic missile as well as seven cruise missiles.

Ukraine says it shot down six of the cruise missiles and has not confirmed any damage done by the ICBM.

Here’s moe from The Hill:

Russian forces launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials in the military.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command said in a post on Facebook that the ICBM was fired from the Astrakhan region of southern Russia, which is about 500 miles away from eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials did not elaborate on whether the ICBM struck its target in Ukraine or if it was shot down.

Russia also fired a Kinzhal hypersonic missile and seven Kh-101 cruise missiles, six of which were shot down, according to Air Force Command. Russia has fired the Kinzhal, which can fly at Mach 5 or greater, several times into Ukraine.

This appears to be the first time that Russia fired an ICBM at Ukraine, though it’s unclear what the strategy was in using it.

ICBMs, typically launched from a ground-based station, are meant for long-range attacks over thousands of miles. They can be equipped with nuclear warheads but also do not have to carry nuclear arms.

The incident follows nuclear saber rattling from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who updated his nuclear doctrine on Tuesday to say that an attack from a non-nuclear armed state on Russia but with the support of a nuclear-armed state would be considered a joint attack.

A conventional missile attack could trigger a nuclear response from Russia, according to the Kremlin.

Below is video from the Kiev Post that they got from a telegram channel showing missiles hitting Dnipro:

The Kiev Post reports “The Russian missile barrage on the industrial city that left two people wounded is the latest escalation since Ukraine fired Western-supplied ATACMS long-range missiles on Russia.”

They also report that “As of noon, the Ukrainska Pravda media outlet, citing its sources in the Air Force, reported that the RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental strategic ballistic missile struck Dnipro overnight.”
