Secretary of State Marco Rubio just announced an agreement made to end the horrifying violence happening in southwestern Syria right now, and that it should go into effect tonight.

He doesn’t go into detail, but here’s what he said:

We have engaged all the parties involved in the clashes in Syria. We have agreed on specific steps that will bring this troubling and horrifying situation to an end tonight. This will require all parties to deliver on the commitments they have made and this is what we fully expect them to do.

This comes after Israel bombed Syria’s security forces last night.

Rubio addressed all of this earlier today in a question from a reporter, and he has delivered as he said he would:

Again, we don’t know the details. But you can believe Rubio is working overtime to restore the peace, and he’s likely using leverage from President Trump’s new relationship with Syria’s new terrorist leader. I’m betting the deal that Trump has wanted to make with Ahmed al-Sharaa is playing a part in restoring the peace.

I know some were critical of President Trump meeting with Ahmed al-Sharaa when he was in the region, and it didn’t look great to me either, but this would be a great reason to establish a relationship with Ahmed al-Sharaa, even if he is a terrorist. Leverage is everything in that region of the world, especially when trying to protect the innocent from genocide.
