After meeting with President Trump at the White House today, Jordan’s King Abdullah released a statement after he left and it shows he’s not onboard with Trump’s plan to relocate Palestinians to anywhere while rebuilding Gaza.
Here’s what he said via Yashar Ali:
In a statement released in Arabic just after he left the White House, King Abdullah of Jordan said this, in-part, about his meeting and lunch with President Trump:
“….I reaffirmed Jordan’s firm stance against the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. This is the unified Arab position. Everyone’s priority should be the reconstruction of Gaza without displacing its people and addressing the difficult humanitarian situation in the Strip.
A just peace based on a two-state solution is the only way to achieve stability in the region, and this requires the leading role of the United States. President Trump is a man of peace and played a pivotal role in reaching the ceasefire in Gaza. We look forward to the continued efforts of the United States and all parties to solidify the ceasefire….”
It’s clear that President Trump has more work to do to convince Abdullah of his plan to relocate Palestinians out of Gaza when rebuilding it.
During the press conference with Abdullah, Trump was asked again about withholding aid if Jordan and Egypt wouldn’t take Palestinians. Unlike last night, Trump took a more demure tone and said he didn’t think it would come to that, suggesting they’d get something done with him having to make threats.
I think he’s going to have to make threats if he wants Abdullah’s compliance.
