It’s just being reported that new FBI Director Kash Patel is moving up to 1,500 agents and staff out of Washington, DC and into field offices located in high crime areas.
Here’s more from the Washington Post:
FBI managers were told Friday that up to 1,500 staff and agents would be transferred out of the bureau’s Washington headquarters, according to multiple people informed about the message, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it has not been publicly announced.
The information came as newly confirmed director Kash Patel sent a welcome note to employees that said bolstering personnel in field offices across the country was a top priority.
Roughly 1,000 agents and administrative employees would be relocated to field offices within cities that the Trump administration has designated as higher crime locations, said the people, who had been told about the plans described to top managers. Another 500 would be reassigned to the bureau’s large satellite headquarters in Huntsville, Alabama, these people said.
Hundreds of agents impacted by the transfer decision are on temporary assignment to Washington, some of the people said, and could conceivably be returned to their home field offices. Other staff and agents who are based in the nation’s capital might not want to move.
Patel, who was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday, spent much of Friday at the J. Edgar Hoover Building in downtown Washington, meeting with staff ahead of his ceremonial swearing-in scheduled for late afternoon.
In a message to all FBI staff Friday morning, Patel said he was committed in his new role “to pursuing justice and upholding the rule of law.” He listed streamlining operations at headquarters and bolstering the FBI’s presence at field offices as some of his top priorities as director, according to one person familiar with the message.
A spokesperson for the FBI did not immediately return requests for comment on the plans to transfer personnel.
Just sworn in and President Trump’s new FBI Director is already shaking things up. I love it. He’s going to live up to everything he promised and I can’t wait.
