Josh Hawley told reporters that President-elect Trump was frustrated with Speaker Johnson and the way he handled this continuing resolution today.
Hawley didn’t say much, but was asked if Trump expressed frustration about Johnson.
“Yes, yes he did,” Hawley responded.
This from a CBS News reporter:
Less than a half hour ago, it was reported that Vance made a visit to Johnson’s office:
Vice President-elect JD Vance is huddling in Speaker Mike Johnson’s office as House Republicans struggle to figure out a path forward to fund the government.
Joining Johnson and Vance on Wednesday night were also: Appropriations Chair Tom Cole (R-Okla.); Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio); Rules Chair Michael Burgess (R-Texas); and Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.).
The GOP confab comes as Johnson is trying to negotiate a short-term funding bill. His initial plan, which would have included aid for farmers and natural disasters, drew opposition from dozens of House Republicans. Vance and President-elect Donald Trump threw Republicans an ever bigger curveball when they said Republicans should also lift the debt ceiling.
We’ll see what happens next. Hopefully the Speaker can get on the right side of this and put out something Republicans can get behind.
