Rep. Sylvester Turner, a Democrat from Texas, died last night just after President Trump’s address to Congress, when he suffered a medical emergency. He was physically present at the address but some time after it was over he passed away. No details have been given about the medical emergency or the cause of his death.

Turner was a first-term House Democrat and was just sworn-in in January.

Here’s more from NBC News, who also lays out the politics of it as well:

First-term Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Texas, died after suffering a medical emergency following President Donald Trump’s address to Congress, according to two House Democratic lawmakers who were informed of his death.

He was 70 years old and had just taken the oath of office in January. Turner previously faced bone cancer. His office later confirmed in a statement that he had died on Wednesday.

Turner’s death means that Republicans now hold a 218-214 majority. Under that breakdown, Republicans can still only afford one GOP defection on any vote if all lawmakers are present and voting.

According to Texas election law, Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, must call a special election to fill the vacancy, but that process could take months.

Speaker Mike Johnson tweeted this earlier today:

We’re saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Congressman Sylvester Turner, who represented Texas’s 18th District. He served his community faithfully, not only as a member of Congress, but as a former state legislator and a mayor of Houston. Our prayers are with his family and constituents as they mourn his loss.

May Turner Rest in the peace of Christ Jesus. Amen.
