An appellate court in New York temporarily stayed the lower court order which revoked some of Trump’s business licenses in the state. While the stay was certainly a victory, the appellate court denied Trump’s request to end the trial.

Eric Trump thanked the Appellate court on X, writing on behalf of The Trump Organization:

We thank the Appellate Division for staying the NY Attorney General’s and Judge Engoron’s overzealous attempt to cancel our New York business certificates. Judge Engoron’s order erroneously sought to adjudicate the rights of non-party business entities that employ nearly 1,000 hard-working New Yorkers, have never been accused of any wrongdoing and, were never given their day in court – in clear violation of their fundamental Constitutional rights and Due Process. We will continue to vigorously defend our company and our incredible employees from this politically-motivated persecution.

Here’s more from PM:

On Friday, a judge with the New York appeals court placed a halt on an order in the New York civil fraud trial of Donald Trump that would have seen the cancellation of his business certificates.

First Department Justice Peter Mouton rejected a motion on Friday from Trump’s lawyers to put the trial on hold, but temporarily placed a pause on the cancellation of the certificates while the appeals process plays out, according to the New York Post.

In its filing, Trump’s team said that Judge Engoron’s decision and order saying that they had until October 26 to list possible candidates for the receiver position were “unauthorized, undemanded, overbroad relief without proper factual or legal predicate.”
The “Supreme Court clearly does not comprehend the scope of the chaos its decision has wrought,” Trump’s lawyers wrote, according to CNN.

“Terminating non-party business licenses without jurisdiction, without process, without statutory authority, without trial, and without reason renders impossible the lawful operation of multiple businesses and threatens termination of hundreds of New York employees without any jurisdiction or due process,” the filing states.

I’m glad Trump got this stay, but it would have been better if the appellate court had killed the trial altogether. But hopefully this means the appellate court will be reasonable given the potentially damaging outcome of this partisan trial.
