Senator Ted Cruz was not happy about the FCC Chairman’s comments on the outrageous remarks made by Jimmy Kimmel on Charlie Kirk and his assassin, where he essentially threatened that ABC’s license could be taken away as a remedy.
Cruz says the Brendan Carr and the FCC shouldn’t be in the business of policing speech, saying there is already a remedy for the lies Jimmy Kimmel told and it’s called a defamation lawsuit.
But even more importantly, Cruz says that if the government is allowed to do this, it will absolutely be used to silence conservatives in the future and that is the true danger.
Listen below:
He’s not wrong, and I’ve never felt totally comfortable with Trump making the ‘take away their license’ threat either. He did it with NBC in his first administration and now he throws it around here. Do I think he’ll ever actually do it? No, not really. I think he likes reminding these stations that their license comes from the government and that he can take it away. But that means it’s just an empty threat that has no teeth, which I’m fine with. I don’t want it to be more than that for the very reasons Cruz states above.
All this said, I still don’t believe the comments of Carr had much bearing on Kimmel getting suspended. ABC knew what the said crossed a line, and it was affecting their bottom line on a show whose bottom line was pretty low to begin with. That’s why he was suspended. They wanted to stop the bleeding before it killed the show.
